Bears Botch New Year's Eve Party
The downside of being a Bear fan behind the cheese curtain is that when the Bears play the Packers and lose it is insufferable. And when the Bears play like they did tonight, it's even worse.
The Bears performance Sunday night was a trip back in time to the days of Abe Gibron. Terrible on offense, terrible on defense and nothing on special teams. And this is supposed to be the best team in the NFC?
I don't know what the secondary was daydreaming about all night. And rarely did I hear the names Urlacher or Briggs called. And, that pretty much goes for most of the D-line as well.
The Packers did what they wanted, when they wanted. And the Bears apparently let them. In fact, Rex Grossman and Brian Griese almost completed as many passes to Packer players as Brett Favre.
And this team is going to be in the playoffs? Sunday night, the Bears couldn't beat Boise State, let alone the Eagles, Saints or Seahawks.
Even if Lovie Smith was holding his cards to avoid having things picked up on film for the playoffs, this was a totally unprepared, uninspired team Sunday night. And, no matter whether you are be it the top seed in the playoffs or a team going home, you don't just roll over on your home field to your arch rival. I know coaches say it only matters to fans, but don't you want to head into the playoffs with some momentum rather than getting beat like a rented mule by an old gunslinger and a bunch of rookies?
I think that when people think of the 1985 championship team they think of the pride most of those guys had in being a dominant team. The defense loved sacking the quarterback and the offense loved making the big play. And, no matter who they played, they never rolled over (okay, the Miami game.)
This edition of the Bears seems oblivious to everything. The team has no soul and even less character. These guys have been sleepwalking since October and have really made "rather be lucky than good" their motto. With almost losses to weak sisters Tampa Bay and Detroit, you think someone would have a boot up somebody's backside by now. Apparently not.
And, I'll say it again. Rex Grossman is Mike Tomczak who is Bob Avellini. It's like the clones in the movie Multiplicity, they just keep duplicating. And before you jump on the Brian Greise bandwagon, it became obvious to me why he hasn't been getting much playing time: He throws with the velocity of my wife throwing a plush toy to the dog.
If you are a Packer fan, rejoice. You've read in the past that I think that Ted Thompson is doing a good job and that the Pack, while not back, is beginning to recover from the nuclear winter of the Mike Sherman GM era. And based on what I saw tonight, I would be shocked if Brett Favre didn't come back for one more year provided Thompson purchases some offensive weapons for him.
If you are a Bear fan, get really drunk tonight. Not because it is new year's eve, but because tonight you saw your future and it sure ain't too pretty.
