Apples and Trees Stay Together
Random thoughts while wondering what ever happened to Bob Boozer:
Think about the fact that several distinct coaching trees have multiple representatives in the NFL playoffs. Yesterday, the Colts, led by Tony Dungy (himself a product of the Marty Schottenheimer tree) defeated his prodigy Herm Edwards. Dungy may get to meet his other branch if his team and Chicago make the Super Bowl in Bears Coach Lovie Smith.
The playoffs will go on without the Big Tuna, but that doesn't mean his coaching tree will be not represented. No less than 4 coaches sprang from Bill Parcells: Tom Coughlin of the Giants, Bill Belichick of the Patriots, Eric Mangini of the Jets and Sean Payton of the Saints.
Mike Holmgren, who will move on to round two after the Seahawks stunning 21-20 victory over Dallas last night, has prize pupil Andy Reid (a.k.a Son of Walrus) coaching the Eagles today against the Giants. Holmgren is a decedent of the Bill Walsh tree (as is Brian Billick of the Ravens who is part of the Dennis Green branch) Walsh descends from the Paul Brown tree, by far the one with the most branches in NFL coaching history.
Today's games are pretty easy to figure out. The Patriots play like champions, get the playoffs and have home field advantage today. Tom Brady is a big time, big game QB, even if he doesn't have the horses to throw to anymore. The Jets are young and not accustomed to the playoffs, the hype and the enemy crowd. Eric Mangini is good, but he's not that good and the Jets will fall to the Pats 24-10.
In the NFC, the Eagles are the hottest team in the league and will have no problem knocking out the Giants. The Giants have issues far greater than today's game like will Tom Coughlin be their coach next year and can Jeremy Shockey keep his mouth shut and his ankle healthy. Add that to Rex Grossman's role model Eli Manning's struggles lately and you have the recipe for Philly moving on to round two, 28-6.
Indianapolis Colts defense. Prior to yesterday's game, that phrase was an oxymoron.
They found over 550 rounds of ammunition in that raid on Tank Johnson's house a couple of weeks ago. He had it all over the place, in the garage, in the bedroom, in the kitchen. So, if you go to Tank's for dinner and he says "the flavor really explodes in your mouth!" consider yourself warned.
Larry Brown has been named an executive VP with the Philadelphia 76ers and may very soon take over for Mo Cheeks as head coach. I guess he wants to keep his record for most teams coached in one lifetime safe from Nick Saban.
Sean Payton was named NFL Coach of the Year this season. I like what Payton did, but my vote would have gone to Jeff Fisher of Tennessee. Considering the dire times in New Orleans, I can see why the vote was there for Payton.
Look Ma, I made a BLOG!
Finally, apparently things are getting violent at Pooh Corner. Tigger apparently bounced his hand off a kids head.
