Brackets Hold for Now But Could Spring Leaks in Round 2

Well, so far, so good.  I went 26-6 in the first round and all of my third round teams are in tact.   I should just declare victory right now and move on because this could be my best first round ever.  Some things that I thought about during Friday's games:
  • I am pleased to announce that I was on the Winthrop bandwagon.  I thought the Irish were seeded way too high.
  • My losing teams yesterday were Creighton, Villanova and Arizona.  Creighton was a 7-10, so I thought maybe there would be an upset.  Kentucky was an 8 beating a 9 and Villanova was a 9 beating an 8, so that happens I guess.
  • Do you think the Wisconsin trainer had the defib paddles ready in the locker room for Bo Ryan at halftime of their game against Texas A&M CC?
  • I have Southern Illinois going to the elite 8, but that was before Matt Shaw twisted his ankle.  Now I'll be pleased if they can beat Va. Tech.
  • Do you think Jim Boeheim watched the Illinois-Va. Tech game and thought that Syracuse could have out played Illinois?
  • I wonder if Tennessee will have any points left for Virginia.  Or any energy.
  • Most wasted first round pick: GW over Vandy
  • Purdue Lute Olsen?  You lost to freakin' Purdue? Might be time to hang the whistle up and pick up the golf clubs.
  • Way to shut up the doubters, Tubby Smith.  If you beat Kansas, you'll really have them confused.
  • Best first round pick: Winthrop over Notre Dame
  • Games I most want to see today if the wife lets me: Louisville vs. Texas A&M, Butler vs. Maryland, Indiana vs. UCLA, Vanderbilt vs. Washington State.  I get a strong feeling that two of these four will be upsets.
Odds and ends:
  • If the Sox would just schedule the Cubs more often, they would win 100 games a year.
  • Sox Closer Bobby Jenks is a slow starter in spring training.  Yesterday, he couldn't get his breaking stuff over to save his life.  Hopefully that's the dry air in Arizona and not a long term issue.
  • I've read that Jenks reported to camp 30 pounds lighter.  Yet on TV, he looks the same to me as he did last year.  I guess it's true what they say about TV cameras.  Either that, or he's been into the Cheeto's again.
  • Sox youngster Jerry Owens looked really good yesterday but no way he goes North and if he does, somebody is going to a new team.  Keep your eyes on Rob Macowiak as that guy.  Perhaps for another starter.
  • If you are the White Sox, do you really want to trot out either John Danks or Gavin Floyd against Cleveland, Minnesota or Oakland.  You can't win a division title in April, but as the Sox learned a couple of years ago, you can sure lose one.
  • I think Green Bay Packer fans aren't afraid of what Randy Moss will do on the field, I just think they don't know what they'd do if they ran into him at a restaurant.
  • Pittsburgh looked good against Montreal last night, but I think they have way too many defensive lapses to go too deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs.  That and I'm still not sold on Mark-Andre Fleurey.
  • I'm starting to get hooked on reruns of "Enterprise."  It's not that good (certainly not as good as Classic, Next Gen or DS 9) but the characters are interesting.
  • Here's what I still can't figure out: If former LSU women's basketball coach Pokey Chatman had a relationship with a former student, where is the harm and the foul?  AND, why did one of her assistants turn her in right before the NCAA tournament instead of waiting until after?  I'm telling you, there is a Lifetime Movie Channel movie of the week here, I can just feel it.  Can Tracy Chapman act?
  • Huge ice deposits have been reported on the South Pole of Mars.  Not to worry, Al Gore claims they will melt in 50 years.
  • I've said it for years: When it comes to being the most backward state in the union, your undisputed winner is Missouri.  Indiana, Arkansas and Mississippi breathe a sigh of relief.
  • Wal-Mart has retracted their application to start a bank.  See, prices ARE getting so high you need to take out a loan to afford anything.
