Lack of Foul Play Bruises Brackets
6-2 for the first part of round two. Our thanks to Washington State and Maryland for playing (or not playing as it were). All four of my final four teams are still alive, although I did have a huge scare with Georgetown. Some observations:
- I didn't realize Vanderbilt was that good. It was a down year in the SEC and you would think that Vandy, a team that went out early in the SEC tournament, would have folded by now.
- Michigan, you need to talk to Kevin Stallings. Yours is the only opportunity that is suitable for him right now. With the resources and tradition there and the ability to recruit players that couldn't even whiff Vanderbilt, Stallings could get the Wolverines back to the dance quickly. Plus, he would join Matt Painter and Brice Webber as former Gene Keady assistants leading programs in the Big 10.
- Greg Oden showed why he may need one more year at Ohio State before venturing into the pros. Of course, common sense doesn't stop most players.
- Sean Miller became the second student victimized by his teacher yesterday. I don't think Thad Matta planned it to be that intense a lesson.
- UCLA was the most impressive team yesterday. Indiana isn't great, but they are no push over easy and they were dispatched with great ease by the Bruins. This sets up teacher vs. student matchup number three between Jamie Dixon and his mentor Ben Howland. Potentially, this could be a pretty good game.
- Attention Gary Williams: Forget your arrogance thinking your team will get the rebound and foul Julian Betko. With only one tourney appearance since 2004 and having not advanced past the round of 32 since 2003, people in College Park are going to being to whisper about Williams at the helm. Yesterdays non-fouling of Betko was inexcusable.
- Games that are must see TV today: SIU-VA-Tech, UNLV-Wisconsin (to see how the Badgers come off their first round scare from Texas A&M Corpus Christi) and Texas-USC.
- Things that might make you say ahhh: Kansas-Kentucky gives you loads of name recognition and tradition, but Kansas is a clearly superior team. For the sake of Bill Self, they better be...Will Tennessee be exhausted from the 121 point effort against Long Beach State? Bruce Pearl's team should survive this round...Memphis looked human against North Texas. Coach Cal should have his team ready to go against Nevada...I think Va Tech could be the Cinderella of the second round. I would be shocked if Winthrop, really the only true Cinderella left, dispatches a pretty good Oregon team.
Other things:
- If you plan on attending the Milwaukee Brewers opener, you may do so comfortable in the knowledge that Al Gore now approves of the bathrooms.
- Memo to Kenny Williams: Brian Anderson, Lance Broadway, and Heath Phillips for Jon Leiber and Aaron Rowand. Make it happen.
- A wise and equally profane rant from Ozzie Guillen regarding success. I agree that what you've done isn't as important as what you are going to do.
- BTW, I think putting all the expletive place holders in Guillen's quotes provides further proof that the Sun-Times wants to get even with Guillen for his rant against Jay Marriotti last year. We all know athletes and coaches use course language on a fairly free flowing basis, yet the only one singled out by the Sun-Times is Guillen. That's why it's hard to use Sun-Times and journalism in the same sentence (exception: Tellender.)
- Important message from Butkus D. Dogg: Check your pet food immediately. There is some tainted stuff going around that will harm and possibly kill your dog.
- Detroit has lost it's title of "rowdiest sports city."
- Ron Artest must be thankful he is not a rugby player.
- Many lawyers win cases because they get jurors to follow "shiny objects." Here are two objects guaranteed to work every time. David E. Kelley, you are on the clock.
