Random Thoughts: Sox School AL Champs; Lou Seeing Green And White Again?
Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Mike Porzio:
- That's what I'm talkin' about. Give the Chicago White Sox some credit. They played see-saw with the
Tigers for six innings before they took the lead in the top of the seventh and used their bullpen to close down the Tigers 5-4. The best thing about leading the Tigers after seven is you keep Zamaya and Jones out of the game. David Aardsma was awesome again in relief, especially when he fell behind Craig Monroe 3-2 to lead off the eighth, then got him out, paving the way for Matt Thornton, Mike McDougall and Bobby Jenks. Nick Masset, another one of the pitchers acquired from Texas, picked up his first career win last night. The biggest news from last night is Paul Konerko got a clutch hit and is maybe ready to snap out of it. The Sox and Tigers lock horns at high noon central time today in Detroit. - I think it's ironic that on the day the Cubs bring their base running instructor in to work with the younger players, Mark DeRosa gets tagged out turning for second and Ronnie Cedeno gets nailed over sliding second on a walk (which is the correct interpretation of the rule. If he's off the bag, once he touches second, it is assumed that he is trying to advance.) Ted Lilly must be going stark raving nuts. He hasn't had a bad start yet, but his teammates refuse to score for him. Lou Piniella is certainly having Devil Ray flashbacks by now.
- In the chase for Lord Stanley's Cup, Buffalo moves on beating the Islanders; San Jose moves to round two after taking five games to push the Predators around. The Preds didn't help themselves by again taking dumb penalties at bad times. And, Martin Brodeur finally made an appearance in the New Jersey-Tampa Bay series giving the Devils a 3-2 lead in that one. Today, Detroit and Calgary in a huge game 5. In fact, since that's being played in Hockeytown, maybe it will take the bloom off the rose at Comerica Park. Tonight, Dallas and Vancouver. Vancouver has a 3-2 series lead.
- I know it's really early, but from what I've seen, the Braves are pretty good.
- Let the rehabilitation/professionally managed contrition/repackaging and re-branding of Pacman Jones begin. Watch for Tank Johnson coming soon to a newspaper near you.
- Georgetown assistant men's basketball coach Sydney Johnson will most likely be a Princeton man.
- If you had April 20th in the "when are they going to start comparing Barach Obama to JFK" pool, please collect your winnings at the door.

- A week after Imus gets shown the door, CBS finally gets around to firing his producer. So much for the claim of corporate outrage. The good thing for McGurk is as a producer, he's under the radar, so if the media leaves him the hell alone, he will probably find a job quickly.
- Last week, I mentioned the station in San Bernardino that was going to rebroadcast Imus despite the fact the show was canceled and, in my view, his contract prevented him from doing so. He didn't listen, so CBS has has unleashed a gaggle of lawyers to make it clear to him. They also want $150,000 per copyright violation (which they will never collect and is just a scare tactic.) This, by the way, is not an FCC issue, it is a copyright issue.
- I have a lot of sympathy for Alec Baldwin. He's a divorced dad with little access to his daughter thanks to his bad relationship with his ex-wife, Kim Basinger. His words were harsh, but it's not like he's whacking the kid around or anything. And the fact that they were leaked on the internet lead me to believe that someone in Basinger's camp wants to humiliate Baldwin. What they have succeeded in doing in humiliating Ireland Baldwin. What needs to happen is the lawyers and spin doctors need to go away and he and Kim get their act together and realize the kid is the most important thing and not their inflated egos.
- Remember "That's My Bush" the hilarious send up of life in the White House with Timothy Bottoms produced by the Southpark guys? Well, Comedy Central is at it again (sort of.)
- When dining out, a lot of people take the leftovers home and feed them to teenagers, avoiding having to take the teenagers with them to dinner which then avoids either social embarrassment or buying one more expensive meal. When dining in Hong Kong, instead of getting a take home box, you get a ticket. If they are so damned concerned about garbage and food waste, try this: Smaller portions.
- Blackberry CEO Jim Balsillie is taking a lot of heat because the company did not communicate with customers while trying to repair the network problem that shut down all of the companies subscribers. The obvious question here is: How can you communicate with them if their Blackberry's are down?
