Random Thoughts: Pointing Fingers Is Easier Than Getting Hits
Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Mike Heathcott:
- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen says everybody is accountable during this slump th
at the Sox are having. Ozzie says when things are going good, managing and coaching is easy. When they are going badly, that's where managing and coaching begin. You get the feeling that everyone on this team is buckling under the weight of expectations and playing in such a competitive division. And, you get the impression that they have not gotten their heads wrapped around the fact that Jim Thome isn't there to bail them out? So how do you fix it? As I keep saying, you let it work itself out. I've seen message boards and blogs which want to trade the entire team and fire Ozzie and fire the coaches and make all these radical changes. And then it dawned on me: White Sox fans are becoming like Cub fans. Look, if you are a real Sox fan, you knew going into this season that this could be a third or fourth place club. And if that's where you set the bar, you're a bit bummed right now, but still optimistic because the pitching has been better than you thought. But if you are someone that was spoiled by 2005 and still think Detroit and Cleveland are doormats, then you obviously want to make changes. Read this: These guys have too much talent to go hitless all year. Please, take a chill pill and report back to me at the end of May. - Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty, in what I think is an honest assessment, says it's not up to the Cardinals to baby sit their players outside of work hours. If Josh Hancock had a problem, and even if the Cardinals knew about it, if it didn't manifest itself on the field, it's not a team issue. And I agree. And I think Walt would agree if it did turn out that Hancock was high and drunk when he plowed into the back of a tow truck early Sunday morning that his death will serve as a reminder to everybody, including his teammates, of how you need to be socially responsible and that karma does not distinguish between baseball players and regular people when you choose to dance in the fire.
- You have to give credit to the Detroit Red Wings. They were thirty-three seconds away from going down three games to one to San Jose when Nicky Lindstrom, fresh off being out for four games with an eye injury, put one home to tie the game at 2, In overtime, Mathieu Schneider untied it at 16:04 and the Wings turn the series totally around. How many goals have we seen in these playoffs scored in the last thirty seconds. Best playoffs on earth.
- Ryan Langerhans is either a hot commodity or involved in a cosmic game of hot potato.
- The president of Talladega wants to get other tracks to ban the rowdies who threw things at Jeff Gordon. If any group is organized to do that, NASCAR is. On the other hand, in races that normally bring in 100,000 people (and don't forget about sneaking in hidden in a camper in the infield, is it really viable?
- Milk, ice cream and pizza are about to cost you more thanks to Al Gore and the corn gas crowd. And that corn gas isn't cheap either.
- There is a reason we need torte reform in this country. His name is Ryan Swanberg. David E. Kelly, this one is perfect.
- Billy Joel stills sings the old songs, but doesn't want to write any new songs. "I'm not motivated, to write the pop stuff, I just go out and crash my car. I don't need money, I don't need Christie, I like me just the way I are."
- Imus lawyers up against CBS. You go boy.
- The US military is requiring that all blogs be approved by a superior officer before posting. This will most likely eliminate blogs, as superior officers are much too busy to spend all day reading blogs. Some cry freedom of speech, but there is no freedom of speech in a war zone. I know that the liberal media will bitch and moan and weep and wail that this is how we truly know how things are going in Iraq. But damn it, our enemies don't need to know it. You don't think Iraqi insurgents have broadband?
