Favre's Demands Put Thompson, Packers In No Win Situation

And the people all said "sit down, sit down you're rocking the boat."

As many who follow the Packers have often surmised, the relationship between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers has deteriorated to the point where, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Favre is demanding a trade. Apparently, after the Packers failed to acquire wide receiver Randy Moss from Oakland at the draft, Favre pitched a fit and had his agent, Bus Cook contact Packer officials and demand a trade.

Favre is more than a player, he is the face of a franchise like Tom Brady is to the Pat riots or Peyton Manning is to the Colts.  Packers GM Ted Thompson has the ultimate conundrum: You can't just trade a franchise player without serious repercussions.  What is his value? Draft picks?  Another player?  Trades in football are not like trades in baseball.  They are usually a disgruntled or veteran player for a handful of shiny new draft picks.  Think what you want about Packers GM Ted Thompson, but trading Favre is not in the best interest of Green Bay. And certainly, Thompson knows full well if he accommodates his QB, Thompson's  name in Green Bay will be mud.

Last year at the draft, Thompson got goaded into trading wide receiver Javon Walker to the Broncos for a draft pick, just to get Walker and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus out the door.  Thompson drew considerable flak among Packer fans for trading Walker for so little value.  He also was criticized by Favre.  Now, once again, Thompson is faced with a bit of a crisis, but I would imagine he'll handle it much differently this time.

There is definitely an impasse here.  The Packers are the second best team in a weak division who are probably two years away from being competitive.  Favre is an aging superstar whose skills are starting to erode and whose window to win one more ring is closing fast.  The issue here is the Packers and Favre have different windows and are operating in separate but parallel universes.

There is little the Packers can do to placate their quarterback.  But there is something Favre can do.  Shut up.

What do you suppose the impact will be in the locker room now that Brett Favre has announced to his teammates, his coaches and Packer nation that he has no confidence in this team to win.  And when you say things like that in public, it hurts everybody involved with the franchise.  Packer fans are somewhat oblivious to this as Favre is viewed with religious zeal, but hopefully they will take it personally.

Ted Thompson has been put in the impossible position of unloading an unhappy player and being tarred and feathered or letting a grumpy player infect his young team.  So, here's how you fix it.  Jointly announce this is Brett's last year with the Packers.  Do the going away tour.  Have Brett Favre day.  Then, at the end of the year, cut ties and let Favre become a free agent and sign with whomever makes him happy.

Packer fans always knew this day was coming, just not so soon and not this way.

Lightning Round:
  • You would think that the White Sox would have used Saturday's 5-4 come from behind victory as a springboard to go on a tear.  Alas and alack, it was not. The White Sox literally played like they were playing with pink bats Sunday as they got spanked by the Royals, 11-1. The Royals?  The Royals?  If I were Ozzie, I'd make everyone come in on their off day tomorrow and take BP.  This must stop.  And no, it's not Greg Walker's fault.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers had their own issues getting throttled by the Mets and Oliver Perez.  Young teams are hard to predict, but the Mets made every bit as bold a statement to the Brewers as the Brewers made yesterday.  Ned Yost and his staff will use this as a learning experience to show the young team that while they are good, they have a ways to go to be elite.  This series really happened at a good time for the Brewers who were getting a lot of outside pub and unwanted attention..  Now that will cool down a little bit and they can focus on playing ball.
  • In the chase for Lord Stanley's cup, the Ducks out muscled the Red Wings 4-3 in OT last night tying the series at one each.  Tonight, the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators renew their series in Ottawa with the Sens holding a two game to none lead.  I have admit, game 2 was unreal, especially with Buffalo tying it with five seconds to go in regulation.  It's no wonder these are by far the most exciting playoffs going right now.
  • Sidney Ponson, your number is up.  Hope Mike Veeck needs pitching for the Minneapolis Saints.
  • Jeff Gordon steams to victory at Darlington.  He stayed out during a caution while many drivers hit the pits because his car was overheating and he needed the clean air to keep it cool.  Great job by the 24 team and crew chief Steve Latarte.  Gordon is winning this year because he hasn't had this kind of kismet with a crew chief since Ray Evernham.
  • Bernard McGuirk takes on Al Sharpton.  McGuirk wins by TKO.  And all of the things he says about how Al and Jesse used the Rutgers women's team to get their mugs on TV is absolutely true because that is what they do.
  • Looks like Amy Fisher and Joey Buttafuoco are hooking up again.  I, like David Letterman, enjoy saying Buttafuoco.  And I enjoy writing Buttafuoco. Buttafuoco. Buttafuoco. Buttafuoco.
  • You've read all the stories about teachers sleeping with students.  Now, Oregon is going to allow former prostitutes to become teachers.  What could possibly go wrong?
  • In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by three separate yet equally important groups: the police who investigate crime, the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders and the networks who decide if shows live or die. These are their stories.
