Hey! A Cub Fight That Didn't Involve Michael Barrett!

The San Diego Padres must be stuck on stupid.  How else do you explain the fourth inning brouhaha which left them with starting pitcher Chris Young and star pitcher Jake Peavy kicked out of the game.  Over what?  Alfanso Soriano acting like a punk?

Now explain this to me.  The Padres are mad at Soriano who posed after his home run yesterday, so Young decides to fire a ball not at Soriano, but at Derrick Lee.  Then, has words with Lee and then throws a couple of right hands that only can be described as pussified not very impressive.  If you want athletes who can fight, watch hockey, because baseball players fight with all the ferocity and energy of Catholic school girls wet noodles.

Peavy isn't even pitching in this series, so if he's the one that believes someone should get payback for showing up the Pads on Friday, then he should do it.  Young must be a complete moron to be cruising along with a no-hitter after four plus innings and giving it up to throw not behind or at the leg of, but in the ear of Derrick Lee.  How clueless do you have to be?  Even if Soriano had passed gas and insulted David Wells mother on his way around the bases, you don't throw at a guy's earhole.  Well, you don't since baseball became a sport of babies civilized men.

Then, in the ensuing fight, in which Cub manager Lou Piniella was toppled to the ground like the statue of Saddam Hussein, Peavy went and got himself kicked out.  So now the Padres, who are fighting with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West will most likely lose their two most effective pitchers for at least one start each serving league mandated suspensions.  At least the Cubs were able to keep Carlos Zambrano out of it and to our knowledge, Michael Barrett didn't sucker punch anybody.

Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry was also ejected, but after today's hitting performance he might need a couple of days off.

Memo to Bud Black: Payback is hell, but you are supposed to paying the other team back.
