White Sox Don't Cast Dye; Find Missing Link

White Sox fans are either relieved or appalled that at least right now, Jermaine Dye is still with the team.  Mark Gonzalez of the Tribune reported earlier that Dye may sign an extension with the Sox, which actually is a good thing.  More on that in a moment.

In the only trade they were involved in, the Sox shipped utilityman Rob Mackowiak to the Padres for pitcher Jon Link.  It is truly amazing to me that again Kenny took a fairly useful player and traded him for a guy who probably will never make it to the big leagues.  Maybe Mike Dubee needed a roommate.  I assume Andy Gonzalez will take over a lot of Mackowiak's PT, although he's a right handed hitter and the Sox have a pretty right handed lineup already, save for Thome and A.J.

I thought for sure Dye was on his way to Boston when the Red Sox acquired pitcher Eric Gagne from Texas.  This might have made it
easier for the Bosox to part with reliever Manny Delcarmen who was coveted by Kenny Williams.   The Red Sox obviously had no intention of moving Delcarmen.

But think about it.  Let's say the Sox extend Dye through 2009.  That gives them a decent right fielder and one of the big horses to carry the offense.  That means the only pieces that need to be swapped out are short, left and possibly center.  Center could now be Aaron Rowand.  Left could be Sweeney, Owens, Erstad or even Pods  if they choose to keep him.  If they can get a couple of pitchers for the pen, they are still a force in the AL.

Yes, Dye has had a bad year.  But so has everyone else.  This has been a down year for the entire team and you can't, as some moron did on Murph's show today, throw all of your venom at Jermaine Dye. Dye is not a bad alternative to what may be patrolling out there next year, the likes of Erstad, Trot Nixon or Geoff Jenkins.  Dye is still a better alternative.  Torrie Hunter and Andrew Jones are pipe dreams and if you acquired one of them you'd have to move Jerry Owens over to left because his spaghetti arm is not right field material.

I think Kenny did right by Dye by hanging on to him and hoping he can sign him to an extension.  Besides, Dye likes it in Chicago and happy players win ballgames.
