Random Thoughts: Grossman Continues To Treat The Football Like A Greased Pig

Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Robin Earl:

  • Sexy Rexy had a couple of nice passes last night as the Bears steamrolled the pathetic San Francisco 49ers.  But he also dropped another snap and he also had former Bear Walt Harris pick off a pass and run it back for a touchdown.  The Bears are getting awfully defensive concerning Rexy with offensive coordinator Ron Turner snapping at reporters after the game.  The bottom line is this does become an issue when it costs the Bears a game (remember the Super Bowl?).  And then what's Lovie going to do about it?
  • The Bears are in continual denial that Grossman's fumbleitis and continued forced passes are not an issue.  Bear fans long for the days of Mike Ditka who would at least acknowledge there is a problem.  Lovie Smith is a master of coach speak, accentuating only the positive and eliminating the negative, latching on to the affirmative and not messing with Mr. In-between.  Sooner or later, somebody needs to flog Rexy.
  • To steal a phrase from the master: "Today's choice and death is not an option" Rex's dropping the ball in the sand or Lovie keepiong his head in the sand.
  • The good news is Devin Hester's shoulder injury does not seem that serious.  The better news is, he doesn't run with his shoulder.
  • Since I live in the heart of Packer country, I didn't see the game last night.  But the most telling thing to me is how all the newspaper reports are glowing that the Bears scored 31 points in the first half despite a few mistakes by their quarterback.  Yeah, against the 49ers.  In a pre-season game.  What's going to happen in San Diego?
  • I didn't watch the White Sox game yesterday either.  I need a break.  So, unfortunately do they.  Ryan Buckvich, here's your bus ticket.  Same for you Mike MacDougal.  The red Sox have one more opportunity to pummel the White Sox today at US Commiskey Park.  The worst part of all this is I get to hear about from my dad, a Red Sox fan since 1931.
  • Baroid Bonds had another good game against the Brewers while the Cubs can't take advantage of the Brewers loss.  The Genius and the Cardinals did. So, heading into today, Cubs by 1½ over the Brewers (who are getting ZERO starting pitching) and by 3 over the Cardinals.
  • Mark Prior says he prefers to start next season, but understands that he may have to go to the pen.  Just be lucky you are on a major league roster next year, Sally.
  • As predicted in this column yesterday, Arthur Blank will go after Michael Vick hard to recoup money after the commissioner suspended Vick for violating conduct codes in his player's contract.  This will be a very interesting story to follow.
  • Outside the Lines did a piece on Vick this morning and played the race card.  They also played the "he didn't kill people, he killed animals" card.  The bottom line is NFL sponsors are sensitive to association with people that kill animals because of the organizational skills of pressure groups like PETA,  It's not what he did, it's the degree of discomfort that it causes which leads to revenue loss.  In all cases, cash is king.
  • Outside the Lines also did a piece on Nolan Richardson who hinted he is being blackballed because he's outspoken.  I don't believe that.  I think seventeen years of having to work at Arkansas caused him to have a meltdown that concerned a lot of people.  But the question remains, if Bob Knight could find employment after Indiana, why can't Nolan find a job?
  • Carl Edwards wins a very tame race at Bristol last night.  Something I haven't seen is any comments from Kasey Kahne on being blocked by Michael Waltrip for several laps until Edwards finally overtook him and went the final 170 laps to victory.
  • In an interesting turn of events, Dale Junior is encouraging people to let up on Teresa Earnhardt. I'm sure she's been getting a lot of crap from Junior nation for allowing him to leave DEI.
  • It just keeps getting better for Houston Nutt.  The odds of him surviving after this year without a major bowl appearance are slim and none.
  • Great analysis by our friends at "AA". who dutifully point out that the proper way to honor a teammate is not to honor yourself.
  • The wacko bimbo who sent bikini pictures to NFL Network boat anchor Rich Eisen has recruited a new boy pal.  In the movie, she'll be played by Glen Close while Eisen will be played by Charlie McCarthy.
  • The feds got Al Capone on failure to pay income tax.  Now the state of Wisconsin department of revenue is about to go after the organization people seem to loathe the most, Wal-Mart.
  • Todays challenge: Fatty or farm animal?
