Watch For Falling Dominoes in the Crazy World Of College Football
My, my, my. The dominoes are falling, aren't they? With USC out of the way, for the moment anyway, your top five in my opinion are: LSU, Ohio State, Cal, Boston College and USF. Your next five are USC, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia and Florida. Wisconsin and Kentucky exit the top ten after losses to Illinois and South Carolina respectively.
Now, here's some interesting things that could happen on the way to the BCS championship game:
Now, here's some interesting things that could happen on the way to the BCS championship game:
- If Florida wants to have another crack at LSU, they will obviously have to run the table to the SEC championship game with victories over Kentucky, Georgia, Vandy, South Carolina, FAU and FSU. Florida needs someone to beat Tennessee and someone (probably Tennessee) to knock off South Carolina. I'm thinking realistically, Outback or Citrus bowl for the Gators.
- The Tigers have two tough games coming up against Kentucky and Auburn and an emotionally charged and heavily hyped game against Alabama on November 3, but they are more like speed bumps than roadblocks.
- Ohio State has to get past Penn State in late October and Wisconsin in early November and the annual war with Michigan as it's only threats to an undefeated season. As much maligned as the Big Ten has been from the pundits, they have a real chance of landing OSU in the BCS championship game.
- USC needs to beat Cal. That should right their ship as long as they run the table.
- I'm doubtful that Boston College and USF can run their tables as BC still has Florida State and Va. Tech on their schedule and USF has Rutgers and Cincinnati. Most likely, those two surprising teams will be playing in a New Year's day bowl but not a BCS bowl.
- Assuming USC beats Cal and that BC and USF lose at least once, Oklahoma and South Carolina appear to be your biggest wild cards.
- Add Missouri and Cincinnati to the list of amazing teams who came out of nowhere this season. Mizzou won very convincingly over Nebraska yesterday while Cincinnati knocked off Rutgers. Before you get too attached to the Bearcats, they still have to play Louisville, USF, and West Virginia.
- Here's another surprise: K-State beats texas (apparently that's not too hard) and then loses a week later to Kansas. The Jayhawks are now 5-0 for the first time in eons.
- Coach Satan has to be annoyed that his Alabama team came out scoring 23 points and only beat Houston by 6, 30-24. LSU and Auburn aren't quite so forgiving and Satan knows that.
- How about Butch Davis biting the hand that once fed him, leading his North Carolina squad to an upset of Miami? Not that it's your daddy's Miami, but still?
- Wisconsin learned yesterday that if you play to the level of your competition each week, eventaully you'll get beat. For Ron Zook, the back to back upsets of Penn State and Wisconsin must be sweet as the guy has been under fire for the last couple of years.
- Speaking of Auburn, the Tigers may have righted their ship with a 35-0 pasting of Vanderbilt yesterday. While the Tigers are out of the national picture, they can be a real spoiled in the SEC and still make a New Year's day bowl game. Every SEC team's goal is to avoid playing the bowl game in Shreveport, formerly known as the weed whacker bowl.
- Dennis Franchione is a man who likes to live on the edge. Already in hot water in College Station, his Aggies had to score 24 second half points to barely get by Oklahoma State. I think Fran is done at the end of the year.
- I've got to think Kartl Dorell is done at UCLA following last night's loss to Notre Dame.
- Lou Holtz says the national champion will have at least one loss this year.
