Just Another Ho Hum Saturday in College Football
Move along, move along, nothing to see here. Nothing happening here. Move along. Yeah, right. There have been more twists and turns in this college football season than on the Python at Great America. Take yesterday for instance:
The game of the day was Auburn and LSU. With LSU trailing by a point with eight seconds left, LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton grows a monster set and calls a pass play. Quarterback Matt Flynn connected with Demetrius Byrd to give LSU a 30-24 victory. Never mind LSU could have simply kicked a field goal Les Miles must be nuts. With USF losing to Rutgers Thursday night, LSU should pull back into the top four at least, if not leapfrog Oklahoma to #3.- #1 Ohio State didn't bring their A game, but did survive Michigan State 24-17
- Ditto #4 Oklahoma who survived a game Iowa State squad 17-7. Given Oklahoma's high powered offense this year, Iowa State coach Gene Chisek shows why he's one of the top defensive minds in the country, even though his team can't generate any offense.
- The Head Ball Coach gets a truly Smelly performance from his Gamecocks at home and falls to Vanderbilt 17-7. Huh? The parade for Bobby Johnson down West End Avenue is today at noon.
- #7 Oregon makes a top five case for itself with a 55-34 thrashing of Washington. However, one thing that may kill any chance the Ducks have in playing in a BCS game is beating Cal won't be that big a deal anymore. The Bears lost their second straight, this time to UCLA. Karl Dorrell may have saved his job with that one.
- Florida finally figured out how to drive a stake in the heart of Kentucky. But give Rich Brooks and his kids credit. They never gave up and proved that the Wildcats are no fluke. Moral victories are good sometimes, I suppose.
- USC beat Notre Dame 38-0 and at least showed they are not dead yet. Whether or not they can get back into the title hunt remains to be seen, but you have to think that somewhere along the line, Boston College, Oklahoma, Oregon, West Virginia, Va. Tech and Arizona State may drop a game or have a close one that nobody anticipated. USC is the one team that is good enough to control it;s own destiny, especially when you consider they can run the table in the Pac 10.
- Yesterday we found out something we always knew: Pittsburgh is a much better team without Dave Wannstedt on the sideline. Davewood was up in the press box yesterday watching his Pitt Panthers dash any hopes Cincinnati had of going to a decent bowl game.
- This is how depressing Tennessee's loss to Alabama must be to Orange Nation. Right before the game, Alabama suspended five players, three of them starters for some as yet unidentified text book scandal. Yet, the Tide rolled all over the Vols 41-17. Me thinks Phillip Fulmer may be feeling it a little this morning.
- Mike Hart hurts his ankle, but Michigan continues its' resurgence, taking out Illinois 27-17. Michigan will be a huge factor in who wins the Big Ten, bet on it.
- It's now three out of four for that crazy tirade artist Mike Gundy and his Oklahoma State Cowboys.
- In what is sure to be their final meeting as Big 12 coaches, embattled Texas A&M Coach Fran leads his Aggies to victory against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln. Newly named athletic director and Nebraska coaching legend Tom Osbourne was seen after the game behind Memorial Stadium sharpening an ax.
