See. Griese Isn't So Bad, Is He?
For 58 minutes and 23 seconds, you seriously thought that the Bears offense couldn't move a pebble up an ant
hill. They sputtered and stalled their way to twelve points, all courtesy of Robbie Gould's right foot. Certainly, with 1:37 left on the clock and no time out remaining and trailing by four points, even the most kool-aid imbibing Bear fan thought there was no way that Brian Griese was going to march the team ninety-seven yards down the field in less than two minutes. But then, something went horribly right and someway, somehow, the Bears escaped Philly with a 19-16 win.
Griese started hitting his receivers and they, in turn, started hanging on to the ball. First it was an eleven yard pick up by tight end Desmond Howard. Then, a nine yard completion to Adrian Peterson, followed by a nine yard completion to Devin Hester. With forty-eight seconds and a facing a third and three, Griese calmly and coolly hit Barnard Barrien for twenty-five yards, and after spiking the ball to stop the clock at :31 seconds, hit Devin Hester for another twenty-one yards, bringing the Bears down to the Eagle fifteen yard line with twenty-nine seconds to play. After another spike to stop the clock, and with fifteen seconds to spare, Griese found Moose Muhammad in the back of the Bears end zone for the deciding touchdown.
I don't care how much you may like Rex Grossman, I guarantee you he couldn't run a two minute drill like that.
After a lackluster performance all day, the Bears finally woke up, smelled the coffee, got the memo and sent 67,806 boo birds home from Lincoln Financial Field with a scowl upon their hardened faces. The only thing that would have made this win sweeter would be if it occurred over the Elderly Hillbilly and theFudge Packers.
Next week against the Lions, there are several areas the Bears must improve on. Cedric Benson needs to be told he is not capable of running East and West. Just try just going straight ahead and we'll get to the advanced intermediate stuff later. Overall, the Bears running game is as bad as it was when Davewood was the head coach. It's pathetic.
The defense has to learn to outside contain, right Mark Anderson? Boy, for a guy who was a stud a year ago, you've sure turned into a dud this year. Didn't Mike Shula teach you anything?
Greg Olsen, anytime you want to protect the football, I'm okay with it. And Barnard Barrien, anytime you want to catch the call (the most impressive thing about the game winning drive was that Barrien actual hung on to something) that's okay, too.
And, Ron Turner, anytime you want to take the training wheels off your quarterback, fine by me. In fact, he did so good when his radio in his helmet shorted out, maybe just let him call his own plays and you can take Sunday off.
Everybody on this team needs to take a lesson from Tommie Harris and Brian Urlacher, both playing it hurt, both sucking it up and doing what needed to be done.
Overall, a fantastic win that hopefully will breed momentum.

- How good are Tom Brady and the Patriots? I mean, really. Think Manny Fernandez and the boys are getting a little nervous?
- It looks like in the scope of one season, Mangenius has become the Village Idiot.
- If Colorado beats the Red Sox in the World Series, George Mitchell needs to test every single Rockie for HGH. After what I witnessed last night, this should go down like the 1984 series between Detroit and just happy to be here San Diego.
- As predicted on this web site, LSU vaults over Oklahoma for third position in the new AP poll. One thing I don't understand: If South Carolina beat Kentucky, why aren't they ranked ahead of them?
- THIS JUST IN: The Genius isn't going anywhere.
