Random Thoughts: Wirtz Goes Hard To The Net And Lights The Lamp
Random thoughts while wondering why the White Sox need two shortstops:
- This may be the biggest Chicago sports story of the year. I'm dead serious. John McDonough is a marketing legend and was a key guy in helping the Cubs get back to respectability. They will miss him greatly on the North side and the move pretty much tells me that the rats are jumping the ship before the vault closes. The longer it takes Tribune to sell the team, the tighter the purse strings are going to get. Meanwhile, over on Madison St., Rocky Wirtz, you are proving that you are a lot smarter than your father ever was. First, you send the most useless suit in Chicago sports history to the penalty box permanently and then you hire a guy who has the connections, drive and know how to save your team. You rock, Rocky.
- As I wrote yesterday, sending
JudyJon Garland to the Angels may have been to clear some future salary for Torii Hunter. I still think he winds up with the Rangers, Aaron Rowand signs with the Dodgers and we're stuck with the Jerry Owens show in center field again. Oh wait. There's Luis Terrero, too. Hey Kenny. If you need some other salaries to clear, just drop me an e-mail. I have a few ideas for you. - I heard Bears GM Jerry Angelo say on WBBM Sunday that "Nobody has fun during a football game, it's like being in a war." And now, Coach Satan tries to get his team jacked by comparing their loss to 911 or Pearl Harbor. Not to sound politically correct, but it is seldom live bombs go off during football games and that people die. Football is a game. 9-11 was awful. It's apples to raisins and both of you offend the memories of people that were lost on 9-11 and at Pearl Harbor with your silly analogies.
- I just want to go on record as saying that Rex Grossman looked pretty good on Sunday. Too bad his defense didn't. And did Cedric Benson get hurt in the second quarter? I don't think I saw him after those two big runs early in the game. Either he sucks, Ron Turner's play calling sucks or Seattle made some very quick adjustments. Wait a minute. Fred Miller just jumped offside again.
- Now that Guy Morriss is out at Baylor, watch for Mike Singletary to possibly get an opportunity. He's currently the Assistant Head Coach of the 49er's and a Baylor alum. This job seems like a dead end. Of course, Dennis Franchione will be available soon.
- I don't know why everyone thinks players are about to fire Scott Boras en masse. The fact that the guy is an
assholetough negotiator makes him popular with the players. A-Rod is big and rich enough to do his own deal with the Yankees and Kenny Rogers is in maybe his last season. It's not a big deal as some of the media, that hates Boras, is making it. - Tommy Tuberville pledges his allegiance to Auburn. I swear, we've seen this movie before, haven't we?
