Breaking News: On A Carousel
Some upheaval this morning in the college coaching world, with no shock, a mild shock and a big shock:
- Big Shock: Jeff Bower is OUT at Southern Miss (alma mater of Brett Favre.) Bower had been with the school 17 seasons and had a record of 118-82-1 at a school that had to fight the SEC for recruits and played in what's left of C-USA after it was raided by the Big East. Reports are Bower resigned, but rumors are he did so at gunpoint. Southern Miss would be a great landing spot for Ed Orgeron.
- Mild Shock: Chan Gailey was asked to leave the building at Georgia Tech. In six seasons, he never beat Georgia. Ask Bill Curry what happens to you when you don't beat a rival, Chan. Bill Callahan, anyone? Paul Johnson used to be at Georgia Southern. G-Tech would be a nice upgrade from Navy and a lot better than SMU.
- No Shock: Ted Roof, who was 6-45 in six years, gets canned at Duke. Do I hear Coach Fran anyone? He'd be perfect for that job.
