Breaking News: Mr. Nasal Joins Farmio and the Kid
It was tough enough listening to Steve Stone's monotonic voice droning on and on all those years on WGN as a member of the Cubs broadcast team, but now, the former Cy Young award winner will jam himself in a chair between Ed Farmer and Chris Singleton for thirteen glorious Friday Sox home games.Chicago loves Mr. Nasal because he is the last link they have to Harry Caray, Chicago's big time favorite. But pairing him with two other color guys (I don't consider Farmer a play by play guy just like I don't consider Simon LaBon a singer or Mike MacUseless a pitcher) seems to be a little overkill.
Stone would be great if he worked in a booth with a bona fide play by play guy, say John Rooney. But pairing him with the monotone of Farmer, another former pitcher, is a disaster waiting to happen. Add to that, Stone is a TV guy by trade and TV guys have a tough time painting word pictures on radio.
There is no doubt that Stone is a valued member of the Score air staff as he brings his Cubs street cred to the Sox flagship, thus giving them a lot more balance than a flagship normally does. And it goes to figure that the Score is going to push to give Stoney some air time. But with that said, it doesn't make a good broadcast. Of course. for a team that employs Ed Farmer, Chris Singleton, Darren Jackson and Hawk Harrelson as broadcast crews, when has that ever mattered?
This could be a tryout for Stone for next year, but honestly, I'd rather have him working with Hawk on TV then messing around with the brutal Farmer on the Score. I also think Stone's talents are wasted doing the actual game and would of more value saving Chris Ronge from himself on the pre and post game shows.
Meanwhile, the ghosts of Bob Elson and Jack Brickhouse prepare to haunt both WSCR PD Mitch Rosen and Sox marketing guru Brooks Boyer.
