Random Thoughts: LSU Came, Saw and Kicked A** Edition

Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Jay Loviglio:
  • The flags are at half staff here in the Midwest because the mighty Big Ten was once again exposed for being what it is big and slow.  LSU took over the game in the second quarterand never looked back.  It's too bad they didn't play USC because that would have been a much better game.
  • A couple of observations regarding the BCS and the broadcast.  First, I hate the fact that Fox has these games.  They know nothing about college football.  This would have been so much better a game if Verne and Gary had been doing it.  Second, why in the hell was Eddie George involved.  He's not only a lousy analyst, he kept referring to OSU as "we."  Yes, i know he went there, but there was no one with an LSU to balance him out.  The halftime show sucked.  The concept of having two former kickers who nobody remembers come back and kick for their team for a scholarship was silly.  It would have been a lot more interesting if it was Eddie George vs. Alan Faneca, two guys who aren't kickers.  I got bored with the bands, too, but that must be in the contract.  Urban Meyer was actually pretty good.
  • Fox is stunned their ratings for the BCS games are so low.  At the risk of being Captain Obvious, I see three reasons: Lack of compelling matchups (did anyone really think Hawaii had a chance against Georgia), lack of credibility with their audience who thinks of them as an NFL not a college network and the fact that college football is a Saturday afternoon, Saturday night game.  How about we play this game on a Saturday night when people are used to watching college football and even better, run it on CBS.
  • Congratulations to a former Chicago White Sox player elected to the baseball hall of fame.
  • How dumb is a TV station in Wisconsin that plans a Packers special for the same night as the New Hampshire primary.  Don't you people have calendars?  Of course, here in Wisconsin, they'd like to elect Brett Favre.
  • You are 67 years old, a legend, a diabetic and your grandson has leukemia.  Joe Gibbs has nothing to be ashamed of in walking away from the Washington Redskins.  Bill Parcells must be kicking himself he went to Miami and didn't wait to see what Gibbs was up to.  The line for this job starts with Gregg Williams and Al Saunders.  Too bad for Marty Shottenheimer he's been there, done that.
  • Oh goodie.  Just what I want to be reminded of, my ten year-old heartbreak.  At least Jean Belliveau won't be there.
  • To the chagrin of most of the planet, Tony Kornheiser is coming back for another season of Monday Night Football.  Joe Theisman reported to be weeping openly.  (Awful Announcing)
  • June Jones is leaving Hawaiifor SMU.  Herman Fraizer is just leaving.  Having covered Herman before, he is no doubt a below average AD but throwing him under the bus for June Jones wanting the challenge of rebuilding another program is not very fair.  I love the state rep who is getting his paw prints all over this deal.  I guess there isn't a whole lot of things legislators should be doing in Hawaii, especially in an election year.
  • Our friend John at Bugs & Cranks exercises some solid logic on why Paul Konerko probably won't be spanking the rally monkey.
  • Sidney Crosby tops the list of vote getters for the NHL All-Star game.  Exactly the way Gary Bettman had planned it.  And you can weep and wail all you want about Detroit getting three starters on the West team, but they actually have something a lot of NHL teams don't have: A fan base.
  • Loser with Socks examines the relationship between Tommy Tuberville and Coach O and how the former Ole Miss coach may come to help his old roommate.
  • In New Hampshire it looks like Hillary Clinton suffer her second defeat to Barack Obama.  Bill Clinton is about to detonate the mines and start over, coaxing one of the great operatives of all time out of retirement.  Me thinks though the horse is too far out of the barn.
  • Yesbutnobut yes with a cornucopia of coach tiradesincluding my three favorites: Dennis Green, Jim Mora and forty year-old Mike Gundy.  These never get old, folks.
