Random Thoughts: One Down, Several More Need To Go

Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Pete Varney:
  • The week long courting of relief pitcher Octavio Dotel has ended successfully for the Chicago White Sox.  Today, the Sox decided to throw over $11 million for two years at the right handed relief pitcher who has had his share of arm and shoulder troubles the last couple of years.  In order to clear room for Dotel on the Sox 40 man roster, alleged reliever David Aardsma and his 6+ ERA were designated for assignment.  That means two things: First, the Sox got nothing for Neil Cotts (who is not in the Cubs plans this year, so we'll call it a wash) and second, why does Mike MacUseless still have a job?  One other note: Dotel cannot play left field, center field or second base.  of course, neither can any of his new teammates. • Outstanding content from the NY Times(via Deadspin) and write your own Brett Favre story or Mad-libs goes Hillbilly.
  • It's a rare college hoop coach gets axed in mid-season sighting.
  • Hockey's biggest hope has an owie that's going to last a while. Seriously, just when you thought that hockey was primed for a comeback, this had to happen.
  • A while back, we brought you the story of the high school football coach who was accused of pushing a player on the sidelines and forced to apologize by a nervous school corporation.  Well, that story now has an unhappy ending.  Clint Grochowski was caught for drunk driving on November 4th when a state trooper found his car on the median.  He resigned his job as head football coach at Eisenhower High School in New Berlin, WI, yesterday.
  • From the Buried Lead: Tiger Woods says he and Kelly Tilghman have spoken and as far as he's concerned, her "lynched" comments are forgotten.  Tiger says most of this is media driven.  Yes, Tiger, the same media that backed off the gas pedal here is the same media who floored the bus and ran over Don Imus.  And you may be tired of me mentioning this, but it still amazes me that this whole thing went away with a whimper, largely because this woman does not shape opinion and is non-political.  But if you are a middle aged white guy who is on a network someone actually pays attention to, watch out for the bus.
  • As much as Fox wants to think a Patriots-Giants Super Bowl is going to be great, a Packers-Patriots matchup would have been infinitely better.  It's not the quality of the teams, it's the quality of the hype.
  • Some humor: Melt Your Face Off has a look into the secret diary of NHL commish Gary Bettman; Serious Sports News. com takes a swipe at Joe Buck and Kissing Suzy Kolber has an exclusive on Peter King's reaction to the Packers and the Elderly Hillbilly's playoff exit.
