Bears GM's Confidence Doesn't Translate

They had a gizmo on Star Trek that allowed them to understand any being that they happened to come across in space.  It was called the universal translator. Its' purpose was to take Klingon or Romulan or Cardassian and turn it into perfect English.

I thought, what would happen if we took Bears GM Jerry Angelo's comments from the other day and ran them through this devise so we could actually find out what he meant.  Here's what came out:

On his twin draft busts, Rex Grossman and Cedric Benson:

"I think Rex is a good football player. And the verdict is still out on Cedric."

"I have to talk Rex up because he may be the cheapest alternative we have a t QB right now if i can sign him to a low base contract with incentives.  It would be nice to see Cedric stay healthy for more than two games just to see if he actually had any talent.  Besides, we've got him locked up and after the lack of heart he showed last year, not even the Dolphins would be stupid enough to trade for him.  Okay, maybe a low sixth rounder"

On reserve running back Adrian Peterson and wide receiver Bernard Berrian:

"I look at an Adrian Peterson and he's a pretty good football player. Bernard Berrian's a good football player."

We have a lot of good football players, unlike New England who has a lot of great ones.

On the talent at the Senior Bowl:

"This is the cream of the crop. Every one of these players, in all likelihood, will be drafted,"

I'm smitten with Eric Ainge!

On what he might do with his first round pick:

"We're going to look at offense real hard and in all likelihood, it could be [the first pick],"

I'm really smitten with Eric Ainge.

On whether or not he can find an impact player who could start for the Bears next season:

"Are there players out here who have traits to start? Yes," he said. "To say a player is going to come in and start, you would have to have a real need … to upgrade the position. Short of that, I would never say a rookie is going to come in and have an impact right away because it's too hard to determine how he's going to mesh in the environment of the NFL.

I'd start Eric Ainge in a heartbeat.

On what the 2008 NFL draft may hold for him:

"So, hopefully, with the players we pick in this year's draft, we will have the same good fortune with them."

I'd better have a good draft or not only will the fans be calling those idiots on the radio for my scalp but Mama McCaskey will want a hunk of my ass, too!
