Ohka's On
Here's a thought for the Chicago White Sox. Yes, you have only two bullpen slots remaining (three if you kick Mike MacUseless to the curb or send him to Pittsburgh for a bag of gently used baseballs.) So, the question is, who is going to get those slots. Here's what we know. The Sox will most likely open with twelve pitchers. It breaks down like this:
Starters
- Mark Buehrle
- Jose Contreras
- Javier Vasquez
- John Danks
PinkGavin Floyd
Bullpen
- Scott Linebrink
- Octavio Dotel
- Matt Thornton
- Bobby Jenks
Mike MacUseless
At this point, I would think the two slots would go to Nick Masset (out of options) and Boone Logan. This would leave out Ehren Wasserman who had a pretty good year last year. Here, let me take you to another place.
First of all, let's once and for all dump MacUseless. He's getting lit up like a Christmas tree right now and all this talk about "he's a project" and "we want to help get him right" is all code for "we're stuck with his sorry ass."
If he is, as you proport him to be a setup guy, then you have too many setup guys. Dotel, Linebrink and Thornton are enough. So please, quit beating a dead horse and hang a for sale cheap sign around his neck and pawn him off for another lousy A ball pitcher (how is Mike Dubee doing these days, anyway?)
That leaves three slots. I'm okay with Boone Logan and Wasserman if you are. For the last slot, I'm going to throw one in from left field: Tomo Ohka. In 2005, the Sox had inning eater Luis Vizcaino, who was not the greatest pitcher in the world, but could throw three innings if you needed it. Ohka is perfect for that middle role. He also has plenty of major league experience. If Coop is really looking for a project, here's one that might even turn out okay. And thus far in spring training, Ohka has done a good job, throwing six innings, giving up only three hits and a run. That's better than Charlie Haegar, Adam Russell or Andy Sisco.
Let's face it: The Sox minor league pitching is comprised of a bunch of guys who are mediocre. Russell, Jack Egbert and Lance Harrell have some potential, but most of the rest of them are stiffs. If you have an opportunity to bring someone in for a year with major league credentials, you might as well give them a shot.
Here's hoping that Kenny and Ozzie figure it out and add Ohka to the roster.
