The First Cut is the Deepest: White Sox Axe Twelve
The White Sox told twelve players that they would start their season in
a location other than Cleveland. None of the cuts are a surprise.
Here are my early thoughts:
- Pitchers: Lance Broadway, Dewon Day, Charlie Haeger and Oneli Perez were optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, and pitcher Lucas Harrell was optioned to Class-A Birmingham. Carlos Vasquez, don't let it hit you where the good lord split you.
- Infielders: Chris Getz, Royce Huffman, Mike Rouse and
Jeff Liefer,
- Catcher: Ryan Smith
- Outfield: Miguel Negron
- Day,
Haeger and Perez were not very impressive in the games that they
pitched. Day is still recovering from his back injury last year and
from possible neck strain watching his pitches leave the yard.
- Haeger
is what he is, a mediocre knuckleball pitcher. In fairness to him, it
is almost impossible to evaluate a knuckleballer in desert air because
the ball refuses to dance.
- Broadway may be written off as a loss or used for trade bait since Kenny Williams thinks he was snookered into picking him by former scouting guru Duane Schaffer. I think he actually might make it, but he doesn't throw very hard and relies on location. If he doesn't have that, he gets lit up.
- Harrell is still at least a year, maybe two away.
- Vasquez gave up more bombs than Iraq after a UN weapons inspection. He'll resurface with the Royals in a couple of years.
- TOMO OHKA SURVIVES ROUND ONE!
- Getz
is a second baseman. 'Nuff said, although looking at his numbers, he's
not too bad. But there is absolutely no room at that inn for awhile.
A non-roster guy,
- Huffman plays third. See above. Another non-roster guy.
- Rouse
plays second and short. See above two previous entries. He has some
MLB (46 games for Oakland and Cleveland) experience, but is a numbers
game casualty. Another non-roster guy.
- Liefer is a 4A guy
who has been around forever. If he doesn't get released, he can fill a
roster spot at Charlotte. Liefer came up with the Sox in 1999 and is a
career .230 hitter. His last cup of coffee in the show (BULL DURHAM CLICHE MEETER SPINS OUT OF CONTROL) was with the Indians in 2005.
- Smith
is a while away for the big club. His demotion will give the Sox more
time to evaluate Donny Lucy vs. Cole Armstrong vs. Toby Hall. I think
Hall gets the backup gig because the Sox feel a lot of guilt about how
he got injured last year. Personally, they need a backup catcher who
can actually throw the ball down to second base. Say what you want
about Miguel Olivo, but he had a cannon. He's the last Sox catcher who
could actually throw worth a darn.
- Negron is a while
away. He was a non-roster guy and was in the Cubs organization. He
can hit, but the line ahead of him is pretty long.

- I think Carlos Quentin starts the year on the D.L. Hall may start there too.
- By my count there is one spot left on the 25 man roster for either another pitcher (can you say Tomo Ohka) or possibly Alexi Ramirez. No way Danny Richar breaks camp with the big boys.
- I also believe that Josh Fields will get sent out until Joe Crede gets moved out which I don't see happening right now. Maybe after Memorial day.
