Somethings Bruin

Like millions of Americans, I have now filled out my official tournament bracket and am ready to have all of the money I may have invested in office pools gone with the wind.

If you really want to see it, here it is

Some highlights:

  • I like UCLA to win the whole thing.
  • I picked Memphis as the first one seed out.
  • Typical of my picking, Pittsburgh is the lowest seed (4) that I have in the final eight.
  • I have very little confidence in the Big Ten.  In fact, I have no Big Ten teams in the final eight.
  • I have Drake going to the final 16, finally being stopped by UCLA.
  • I have Kansas going out in the final eight to Georgetown.
  • I have Butler upsetting Tennessee in the second round
  • I have USC upsetting Wisconsin in the second round
  • I have George Mason upsetting Notre Dame in the first round.
  • I have Purdue upsetting Xavier in the second round
  • I have Davidson upsetting Gonzaga in the first round
  • I have Kentucky upsetting Marquette in the first round
  • I have Arizona upsetting West Virginia in the first round
  • I have Georgia going out in the first round.  But what a fantastic story that was over the weekend.  Of course, they were helped by the fact that none of the heavyweights could make it to the finals (Tennessee, Vandy).
Just a couple of notes on the tourney overall:
  • Georgia cost Va. Tech (or Kansas State depending on whose opinion you read) a spot in the tournament.  I have to think they were the last one on the bubble when it burst.
  • I was surprised Kentucky made it at all.  But, you can't have an NCAA tournament without Kentucky, can you?
  • I was surprised Indiana was seeded 8th.  I thought of them more as a sixth seed.  It's almost like the committee wanted to impose their own sanctions on IU.
  • When was the last time the Big ten only got four teams in the NCAA tournament.  That's shocking!  I don't think the SEC deserved six teams and I'm sort of wondering about Baylor.
