Wither Juan
My, the bowels of White Sox fans are in an uproar this morning with the news that Juan Uribe has been placed on the waiver wire.
I'm not an expert on these things, but I do know there are several kinds of waivers in MLB, not just the kind that send a player to the garbage dump. Besides, if the Sox released Uribe outright, they would have to pick up his $4.5 million salary this year. We know from experience that the Chairman would never allow anything like that to happen.
If, as many of the writers and bloggers are suggesting, that this is simply an exercise in evaluating the ROI on an overweight, free swinging, miscast second baseman, then I'm all for it. The problem is, if someone bites (paging Andy McFail), what do the Sox do at second?
Danny Richar has back issues and has hardly played this spring. Pablo Ozuna is the world's greatest fill-in, but a not ready for prime time player and Alexi Ramirez, while impressive in Arizona, has a steep learning curve if he expects to contribute right away. So, in essence, Uribe is the best choice of the motley crew. Is it possible that the Sox are thinking about Jason Bourgeois? He's a decent hitter, but has the hands of a statue---the Pasquino.
It has become obvious that Ozzie is totally out of love with Uribe. His comment yesterday that Uribe is a great spring training player but wait until the regular season starts, smacks of a manager who has run out of patience with a player who can be both brilliant and maddening. But seriously, Ozzie, who else do you have right now?
Kenny Williams has turned out to be the person who shows up at the church covered dish supper with gourmet food. Nobody wants to sample it because they aren't sure what it is. In both Joe Crede and Juan Uribe, Kenny does have some parts to upgrade his team, but the parishioners aren't sampling because either the price is too high or they are not exactly sure what Kenny put in his stew.
I'm of the opinion that this whole Uribe thing is information run amok and he will be on the bench when the Sox meet the Indians on opening day.
So Long Tomo, We Hardly Knew Ye: The Sox sent pitcher Tomo Ohka and his .090 ERA to the minor league camp for reassignment. This almost certainly means Ohka will move on. Never mind that Nick Masset got lit up for six runs in three innings of work yesterday, he will most definitely make the roster as the long guy, spot starter. Kenny refuses to admit maybe Masset is a bust. Of course, this is a team that continues to employ Mike MacUseless.
