Time Stands Still On Opening Day (If Mother Nature Cooperates)

Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes
You know I think it's time to give this game a ride
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun
It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye
Oh, put me in, coach - I'm ready to play today
Put me in, coach - I'm ready to play today
Look at me, I can be center field

The time for talking is over, the boys are assembled and this afternoon at 2:05 (CDT), your 2008 Chicago White Sox take the field against the Cleveland Indians, the sexy choice to win the AL Central this year.

If the White Sox want to send a message that last year's 90 loss season was a fluke, they can start by beating C.C. Sabathia.  Head to head against Mark Buehrle, Sabathia is 5-0 with Buehrle 0-5.

Rain is forecast in Cleveland today, but at least the high is supposed to be almost 60.

As in most ballparks, a huge opening day celebration is planned.  The Indians will stroke their new naming rights sponsor, Progressive Insurance, by having 335 Progressive employees unfurl a huge American flag before the game. If you are an Indians fan, you have to be happy it's Progressive and not Geico.  Then there would be either 335 geckos or 335 cavemen and that would embarrassing.  Ironically enough, Dennis Haysbert, a man that had a significant role in Major League, a movie about the Indians, is a pitchman for Allstate.

Things to watch for today: How aggressive will the Sox be on the bases?  How will the 1-2 punch of Nick Swisher and Orlando Cabrera look?  If Mark Buehrle sputters early, can the bullpen pick him up?  How will the cold weather affect Joe Crede's back?  Jim Thome's back?  Can this team come from behind if necessary.

Usually, these opening games with the Indians are shoot outs, so strap it down and get ready for White Sox baseball!
