Sox Put Tigers in the Tank
That's what I'm talking about. Go into Detroit, come out with a sweep. Start the season 4-2 (technically 5-1 if you discount the umpiring from the opener) against teams in your own division. Now what? The Sox open the home portion of their season this afternoon against the Twinkies. While Sox fans are still giddy about the hurtin' put on the Tigers last night, they should be cautioned to control their enthusiasm a little bit.
Still, after six games there are some things we may have learned about this team:
- They are capable of coming back and really don't ever seem down.
- Nick Swisher is effective in the leadoff spot thanks to his patience at the plate.
- A.J. Pierzynski is off to an outstanding start this season. Jermaine Dye is starting strong. Joe Crede had a good night at the plate last night. Carlos Quentin has looked good.
- Defensively, Crede is rusty and Orlando Cabrera does not have nearly as good an arm as Juan Uribe. Last night, Cabrera made a backhanded, spinning play in the hole, but his throw made it to first on four bounces. Uribe would have had it over there in time but probably never would have gotten to that ball in the first place.
- As I have mentioned before, Swisher is a better centerfielder than anyone gave him credit for. In the wide expanses of Detroit, he covered a lot of ground. Carlos Quentin has shown he has an above average arm. Outfield defense in left and center was a big problem for last year's team.
Let's hope Javy Vazquez has a better start, but even if he comes out and gets roughed up, most of the bullpen is available.
A couple of final thoughts:
- Ozzie has found the perfect role for Mike MacUseless. "Here's a bucket, son. Go mop up."
- Sox Machine has a great breakdown of Sox bullpen facial hair...real and imagined. Love the porn stash on MacUseless.
- Did you hear A.J. on the foul ball that hit the umpire? ESPN really needs to check those sound bytes better.
