A Slice of History
If you are a true baseball fan, you will want to tune into your local PBS station tonight for the show "The American
Experience." Tonight it is about my favorite ball player of all time Roberto Clemente.
You know the legend, but you should hear the story. I remember how he totally disassembled the Orioles in the 1971 World Series. I remember that he had the greatest arm I have ever seen in person and perhaps on TV (in fairness to Willie Mays, I saw him at almost the end of his career so it's not a fair comparison.)
While I am sure you have seen Clemente documentaries before, I can tell you that American Experience is a very in-depth show and will most likely go very deep into the character and life of Clemente. Not being sports show but a history show, it will also give you an idea of what social conditions were like at that time and how Clemente fit into his era not only as a baseball player but as a man.
Some of the interviews in the program are Orlando Cepada, Manny Sanguillen, Al Oliver, Steve Blass and Mr. Men at Work, George Will. The show is narrated by Jimmy Smits.
Check it out or set your TIVO.
