Cry Not For Frank Thomas: He'll Do Enough Crying For Both Of You
I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I am smart enough to know that if I ever called out my employers in the media for being cheap and for conspiring against me I'd probably lose my job.Frank Thomas apparently never got that memo.
Informed he was being benched indefinitely (.167/3/11) Thomas told the Toronto media that the Jays were actually benching him so he wouldn't make his at bats total which added a year to his contract. Amused Blue Jay officials immediately told Frank to go away.
White Sox fans know firsthand that as great a player as Thomas is (and he will be in the hall of fame), he is a first class me first crybaby. Thomas is a firm believer that there is indeed an "i" in "team." This is how Thomas, who should be one of the most beloved players in Sox history, got the nickname "The Big Skirt."
Near the end of his tenure with the Sox, it was obvious Thomas has over stayed his welcome. Several injuries, a public shouting match with a former manager and his total lack of concern for anything other than himself rendered Thomas expendable. The fact that the Sox let Thomas hang with the team long enough to win a ring in 2005 is a tribute to them. The fact that they let him speak at the victory ceremony is also a tribute to an organization that didn't have to honor a player that contributed in only 34 games and 102 at bats. But they did.
After releasing Thomas, his comments were something to the effect that the organization had totally changed and he was going to move on. No, Frank. The organization, led by Kenny Williams was smart enough to realize that your salad days were over and you had outlived your usefulness. Even die hard fans, who appreciate everything you did for the team (me included) were taken aback by your bitterness. Even our untrained baseball eyes could see it.
I fully expect Frank to get one more chance, perhaps with Tampa Bay who has been considering Barry Bonds. Thomas would give the Devil Rays a non-steroid using alternative to Bonds who is just as stuck on himself.
