Random Thoughts: Weather Not for the Birds...or the White Sox

Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Jim Otten:

  • The weather in the Midwest has taken a more March like tone the last day or two.  Last night, as a matter of fact, I drove through torrential rains from Sheboygan to Waukesha.  The forecast for the rest of the weekend calls for clouds and below normal temps.  Hopefully, the Sox will be able to get in their two games today, rescheduled after last nights postponement after one inning.  I especially hope they get in to night's game so i can watch it on WGN.  In order to give Mark Buehrle a break, John Danks starts the day game while Nick Masset starts the nightcap.  This will tax the bullpen somewhat.  Look for Mike MacUseless early in game two if Masset can't hang wif 'em.  The other problem facing Ozzie Guillen is if Danks has an early meltdown, it will really mess up his pen for game two, seeing as how Masset will not be available.
  • It's NFL Draft day across the country.  Unfortunately, due to family commitments (i.e. sacrificing watching the draft for baseball.  Given the weather it's a gamble) I won't be watching.  The Bears are in a tough spot with needs at Quarterback, running back and offensive line.  The problem with offensive line is you rarely get a guy who has impact the first year that's not a top five pick. In fact, offensive linemen are like cars: Best buy one used.  At running back, I think Rashard Mendenhall is overrated.  That said, the kid from Pittsburgh, Jeff Otah, looks like the best bet.  The only problem with him is he played for Davewood Bumstedt, which turns Bears fans stomachs.
  • It's hard to believe that it's been 25 years since the greatest coaching tirade EVER.  Mike Gundy has a long way to go to be in Lee Elia's class (even though Mike is a man and he is forty.)  BTW, after I read this story, I realized Marty Brennaman may be on to something.
  • One classy player passes another on the all-time homer list.
  • Sorry Cheeseheads.  No matter how many awards the Elderly Hillbilly wins, he's not coming back.
  • I covered sports for a lot of years and two of the classiest gentlemen I ever did get to cover were Barry trotz and Brett Peterson of the Nashville Predators. They got through this year with smoke and mirrors and still made the playoffs while everything stable swirled around them.  Nice to see that they were rewarded.
  • For those of you with clearance to watch the NFL draft, AA has come up with a terrific drinking game.
  • I've had my personal bouts of going from the mountain to the scrap heap, but I hope I'm never, ever this disparate for attention.
  • People, especially those with a few kids love pizza, because per person, it's a very affordable food.  Looks like that's out the window, too. So, if Barrack and Hillary get elected and raise our taxes to pay for entitlement programs and the mythical hole in the ozone layer or if John McCain gets elected and diverts all our tax dollars to the armed forces, pizza will look even more expensive.  Isn't it sad how the middle class can't catch a break in this country?
