Random Thoughts: No, No, No, No. No, No, No, No, Damn
Random thoughts while wondering whatever happened to Barry Jones:
- Pink Gavin Floyd came within two outs of a no-no last night. You probably wouldn't have known it from the first inning last night. With one out, Floyd gave up two walks. He should have been out of the inning, but a double play call was botched at first, leaving runners at first and third with two out. Floyd pitched out of it and trouble for the next several innings. Hopefully, this will get the Sox in gear. The Sox went on a prolonged slide after Mark Buehrle's no hitter last year against Texas.
- The Sox won the game doing things they hadn't done during their six game losing streak. After the first two men got on, Jim Thome and Paul Konerko made outs, leaving it up to Jermaine Dye, who promptly singled up the middle. So simple yet so elegant.
- There's a reason that Steve Rosenbloom is our hero and role model. Here are his thoughts on Dollgate: The whole inflatable doll thing in the Sox's clubhouse? Funny. Both the idea and the dopey outrage in some places. Jeez, if ballplayers -- any athletes -- have to maintain political correctness in the sanctuary that is the clubhouse where they spend more time than they do in their own house, then either keep the media out or turn this into Major League Chess. I mean, what do you expect from guys who are frat brothers in a lot of ways? Are they supposed to host American Girl parties? Roll out show tunes? Listen, just admit that sometimes when a group of men are together, men-like crudities happen. You know, just like blue language and crude talk happen when girlfriends get together, and anyone who says different is stupid or lying, take your pick. Preach on, my brother.
- MLB has jumped on the pile that is Dollgate. Primarily run by liberals with no sense of humor (yes, Bud, I'm talking about you) they are basically making sure that the world understands that they don't condone this type of behavior. In a perfect world, baseball would let the sanctity of the clubhouse be what it is. Unfortunately, in an effort to cater to the media and potential marketing partners, the league will step in and waive a disapproving finger. No doubt, Congress will be holding a hearing on clubhouse hijinx next. Henry Waxman is probably drooling already.
- The Hawks and Bulls shake up their broadcast teams. The Hawks bid buh bye to Dan Kelly Jr. who, frankly, has been living off his name for years. While I'm not a huge Pat Foley fan (I'm old enough to remember Lloyd Pettit who was the best ever), Foley is a fan favorite who deserves to call NHL, not minor league games.
- On the Bulls side,I'm not so sure trading Tom Dore for Chuck Swirsky was a great move. Neil Funk is a terrific radio play by play guy (who should stay on the radio)and the best move for the team would have been to just make one change and eliminate Wayne Larrivee. As much as I love Larivee doing football (although he is a traitor, leaving Chicago for the cow pastures of Green Bay) his basketball work has never really impressed me. If the Bulls really wanted to go retro, they could have invited Jim Durham back.
- The Bears haven't let Cedric Benson go yet, but Adam Archuleta was sent packing yesterday. While this won't help the Bears running game, it will definitely help the defense. If ineffectiveness is cause for dismissal, then Benson and perhaps Rex Grossman should join him in the unemployment line.
