It's Only The Big Inning
As a Chicago White Sox fan, you had to at very least enjoy the second inning last night in the Sox 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. Nine men came to the plate, there was a three run home run by Brian Anderson (my pick to click last night) and a two run shot by Carlos Quentin. Six runs in all and a big lead for Javy Vazquez, who has getting no run support lately.Unfortunately for Javy, he didn't have his "A" game last night and perhaps not even his "B" game, but it didn't matter. The Mariners offense has been as sluggish as the Sox this year and even though they put up a few runs, they were shut down by the Dotel to Linebrink connection. When the Sox put up another run in the top of the ninth, Matt Thornton, not Bobby Jenks closed out the game.
The Sox and M's close out the series this afternoon with Pink Gavin Floyd on the mound for the White Sox. This could be a tough outing for Floyd, one start removed from an almost no-hitter.
Some interesting things from the game that I noticed.
- I was not really excited about the lineup last night, with Nick Swisher, coming off a day off, hitting in the five hole. I would have preferred him to hit seventh behind Joe Crede at five and perhaps Brian Anderson at six. As it turned out, Swish had a decent night.
- Brian Anderson is giving the Sox every reason both defensively and offensively to keep him on the big league roster. He almost made another spectacular catch last night on a deep fly in the bottom of the sixth with the ball just trickling out of the webbing of his glove.
- Jim Thome was out of the lineup last night, partially because he's slumping and partially because Jarrod Washburn is a lefty.
- Ozzie also rested A.J. and played Toby Hall. As much as I rip Toby Hall, the guy had a hell of a plate block on Ichiro in the bottom of the seventh that prevented the M's from making the game closer.
- According to Joe Cowley, Ozzie has been considering his future lately. The thing about Ozzie is that he always draws attention to himself to take the heat off his team. There was one other famous Chicago icon that did that and he's still as popular (if not more popular) than he was in his hay day. His name? Mike Ditka.
- Carol Slezak tries to wiggle off the hook from her embarrassing "Dollgate" column by painting men as knuckle dragging Neanderthals (you know, the same way she brands men as sexists.) If you missed it yesterday, the definitive opinion on this was written by Panger at Foul Balls.
