Sweepless in Seattle
Being a Chicago White Sox fan can be maddening sometimes. Yesterday, their 6-3 loss to a sputtering Seattle club could be the peak of the madness.Having won the first two games of their series against the Mariners, the Sox attempted to do something they hadn't done since August of 1993: Sweep the M's in Seattle. With their most consistent pitcher Pink Gavin Floyd on the hill and their offense starting to play a little better, the fleeting thought came to your mind that perhaps there would be a sweep. In the words of Leo Corso: "Not so fast, my friends."
The Mariners trotted out Miguel Batista who was rifled by the Rangers his last time out. Throwing more sliders than a White Castle grill man, Batista was continually allowed to wiggle off the hook. In the first inning, the Sox got the first two men on but could only put up two runs when they clearly should have scored more. The Sox also had opportunities in the second, third, fifth and sixth and couldn't cash in.
Meanwhile, Floyd didn't last five innings (we warned you about that yesterday.) It's clear he didn't have anywhere near his best stuff and perhaps the toll of pitching an almost complete game earlier in the week has tired his arm a little bit. With any luck, he'll be ready to go Friday night in San Francisco.
Kids, if you want to be playing baseball instead of golf this October, these are the kind of games you have to win.
The Sox open a big four game series against the Angelsof Anaheim, Azuza and Kookamonga tonight in SOCAL.
Lightning Round
- The Cheat has some outstanding observations this morning (Southside Sox)
- I've heard a lot of the regional and local announcers through MLB Extra Innings and I have to tell you, among the absolute worst is Dave Sims of the Seattle Mariners. Yesterday, when the Sox brought Ehren Wasserman (P.I.) in to pitch the ninth, Sims mentioned Wasserman's hometown of Sylacauga, Alabama. For those of you that have never lived in Alabama (I will refrain from comment here so as not to offend my lovely bride) the correct pronunciation of said berg is sil-a-cauga. Sims, clearly reading on the fly trying to fill, pronounced it silockula. I'm serious. Somebody that inept shouldn't be sitting in a Major League Broadcast booth. If you don't know how to say something, don't say it or ask somebody how to pronounce it before you say it. Jackass.
