Sox Need To Get 300 Lb. Indian Off Their Back
Everything or everyone has a weakness. Superman had Kryptonite. Women have chocolate. The White Sox have C.C. Sabathia.Even though the Sox have been white hot recently, tonight they face Sabathia and his 14-3 career record against them. It's a wide (um I mean tall) even for a team that's won five straight and nine of their last thirteen. As well as they have played, beating Sabathia is no picnic in the park .
Yeah, okay, the Sox came back on him on opening day, but the weather was not fit for man nor beast. The positive here is the Indians are actually below the Sox in team batting average and when he is right, Jose Contreras is a showtime pitcher.
Jim Thome will most likely be back in the lineup after four days off because of little league rules. Hopefully the rest will find Thome a little more loose and able to unfurl his bat at a slider. Paul Konerko's thumb is a concern and some have suggested he be put on the DL to rest it. Nick Swisher had a big hit Sunday to get the Sox off the mat, so maybe that will carry over. Juan Uribe may be back in the lineup tonight if his hamstring allows, but I think it's a wash with Alexi Ramirez, with Ramirez having a lot more speed.
This series can only be described as two male dogs staking out their territory. Worst case, the Sox get swept and go downhill from here. Best case, they sweep and take a 3½ lead in the central division.
It's become obvious early in this young season that this is a three horse race between the Indians, White Sox and Twinkies. The Tigers may be able to crawl out the hole that they dug themselves, but the Sox, Indians and Twins would all have to go south for a prolonged period. Besides, the way you get back into it is beating teams in your own division and the Tigers have a real problem doing that with then White Sox.
It's important right now, May 20th, for the Sox to send a loud and clear message to the Indians. One that includes getting a 300lb Indian off their back.
