Random Shots: White Sox Pushed Over Cliff
Random shots while wondering whatever happened to Dennis Cook:
You know things are against you in a given game when you are beaten on a walk off home run by a guy who spends the majority of every season on the DL. Of course, when you leave eight men on base and GIDP twice, you aren't going to beat a whole lot of teams. The saddest thing about the White Sox 2-1 loss last night was that they wasted another great effort from Jose Contreras.- Despite the fact that Alexi Ramirez appears to be adjusting (finally) to Major League pitching, Ozzie is sticking with Juan Uribe. Just what the struggling Sox offense needs, another guy who can't hit.
- Orlando Cabrera finally took Ozzie Guillen up on his offer to meet with him. Ozzie doesn't think that there is a problem, although he did encourage Cabrera to spend more time with his teammates. In fact, A.J. Pierzynski wouldn't mind taking him to wrestling practice.
- Maybe the struggling White Sox offense should study some film of these guys.
- Is it time to panic about the poor season of Nick Swisher? I'm not ready to write him off yet. (Sox Machine)
- Has Kenny Williams successfully dumped his trash in someone else's yard again? (Ump Bump)
- Tom Fornelli is deadly accurate this week. (Foul Balls)
- The Blackhawks signed some kind of partnership deal with the White Sox, yet the team getting the love is the Cubs. Go figure. Brooks Boyer appears to have been pantsed again.
- The Chairman says that he made the right move firing Doug Collins, but now he feels Doug has matured and perhaps mellowed enough where he might be able to lead the Bulls successfully. He also is thinking of moving Hawk Harrelson back to GM and re-hiring Terry Bevington to replace Ozzie Guillen. Did anyone else besides me happen to notice that Collins' "mature" style crashed and burned with both the Pistons and the Wiz?
- Speaking of nuts, rumors are flying that the impending management of Tampa Bay may replace current coach John Tortorella with ESPN hockey guru Barry Melrose. Granted, Tortorella isn't Toe Blake, but he has won a cup. Melrose made it to the cup finals coaching Wayne Gretzky and didn't win. He had a losing record (82-103) with the Kings. If you want to grab a guy from TV to coach your team, at least Don Cherry (250-153) had a winning record. The bottom line is that this is a cheap publicity grab which will end in flames a year and a half later if allowed to come to fruition. Barry Melrose and the hockey world are best served with him being on TV, sharing his passion for the game with apathetic Americans. What's next? Bob Davie at the University of Washington?
- From the people that bring you Tony Kornheiser, Skip Clueless, Scramin' A. Smith and Mike Lupica comes perhaps the most obnoxious one yet. (Awful Announcing)
- For those who continue to believe that conspiracies don't exist in David Stern's NBA, welcome to the 2008 turn back the clock and bring back the glory finals.
- I found this characterization unfairsimply because whomever wrote the article has no clue that Hawk is first and foremost a Sox fan and reacted the way most of did last night after the home run. I've heard the majority of play by play teams on MLB Extra Innings and I can tell you at least Hawk and DJ are entertaining. And they can correctly pronounce Sylacauga.
