Ozzie Rolls Bus Over Kenny, Backs Up, Rolls It Over Him Again

I've always been a big Ozzie Guillen fan.  I find his honesty and candor refreshing, even if his profanity laced tirades wear a little thin after a while.  The truth is that Ozzie wants to win, and when he doesn't, he gets mad about it.  But in this last meltdown, the one where he is demanding changes, I think even Ozzie has gone a little overboard.

Kenny Williams is absolutely correct when he says that "you don't roll the bus over your boss, especially when he's had your back."  Just having a boss that has your back in this day and age is a tribute to the relationship between the fiery manager and the equally fiery GM.  Yet instead of sitting down behind close doors with Williams to figure out the next step, Guillen called him out in public, which is never a good thing to do, even for someone as secure in their position as Guillen.

If Ozzie would figure it logically for a moment, he has to realize that outside of outright releasing players and eating large contracts, there is not a whole lot Kenny Williams can do to relieve the pressure on his offense.  The minor leagues are bare (except for journeymen/four A types like Brad Eldred).  Yes, there is the cry for Josh Fields, but Joe Crede isn't really the problem.  Jerry Owens isn't the answer either as he can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag with a machete.  So, who then do you trade for and who do you trade to make Ozzie happy?

The fact is most teams would be interested in members of the White Sox pitching staff and they are pretty much untouchable given their stellar performance this year.  Certainly, you could trade a Boone Logan, Matt Thornton or Mike MacUseless, but that would net exactly what?  Not a Coco Crisp.  Maybe a Brian Giles, who can't play center and is 37.  So, from the perspective of blockbuster trade, the Sox have position players most teams aren't interested in (exception Joe Crede) and very little available among the pitchers and minor leaguers.

The only way to improve the offense is to DL Paul Konerko, giving him time to rehab his injured hand, play Nick Swisher at first and use Brian Anderson and Alexi Ramirez in center.  You could waive Juan Uribe and give Pablo Ozuna at second, but that deprives you of your best utility player.  There is no way the Sox are going to cut Jim Thome.  If they did, they could make Jermaine Dye the DH, move Swisher to right and (sigh) bring up Owens.  But I think Thome is one of the Chairman's favorites, so he's going to stay right where he is.

There are no easy moves, quick fixes or miracles.  On the other hand, when and if these guys start hitting and stop leaving men on base, they will be a formidable team.  It's not like last year, when they had folded their tent at this point in the season.  This team is in first place and can stay there if guys like Thome, Konerko and Swisher would just start making contact.

For Kenny and Ozzie, the solution is neither addition or subtraction.  It's steer the course, hang in there and continue to evaluate.  That and kiss and make up.
