Score Won't Go South Without North
The recent public airing of the contract situation between Chicago radio station 670 The Score and morning man Mike North lead us to believe that there will be a change there soon. For the folks at Score, that must come as a relief, considering their live morning show with a host that gets paid over a million per year, is getting pummeled by two guys on a satellite feed from Connecticut.Let's cut into the bluster and let you know how these things work. Obviously, The Score believes that they are not getting the ROI they should be getting. While North probably brings in some advertisers, their profit margin on an important daypart is not where it should be. Therefore, they will try to get North's salary more in line with what their margin should be. They know that this will be unacceptable to North and they know it will cause him to walk. That's what they are hoping.
Meanwhile, North is spouting the typical, egocentric "They never did anything to promote me" bull crap which many egocentric personalities spout (I lived this once, so trust me on this.) Most radio personalities don't have a clue as to the intricate details of programming a radio station. But like ballplayers, they all think that they are smarter than the program director (which in most cases is not true.) So, they go to anyone that will listen and whine that their show isn't being promoted properly and that the failure is because of the PD or the General Manager or the company or whomever. They have ideas damn it, and those ideas are not being taken seriously. They will never realize that maybe they just aren't as popular as they thought and that maybe their way of doing things doesn't move the meter.
Ultimately, one of two things happen: Some naive GM or some out of the loop corporate wonk gives in to the host, fires somebody in management and then realizes a short time later when the numbers don't go up that maybe they should have fired the host instead.
"They don't promote my show" means that every promo on the radio station "isn't about me and they won't pay for my trip to the US Open."
Losing Mike North may not hurt the Score, it may actually make it better.
