Don't Let it Hit You Where The Good Lord Split You
Remember when you were a kid and you were acting up and your dad would give you that look and say "Just give me a reason." That meant knock it off or he would remove his belt and make you understand that your behavior was inappropriate.Jerry Angelo probably said the same thing to Cedric Benson following his first arrest for drunk boating a few weeks ago. While most feature running backs are getting ready for the upcoming season, Benson has been preparing by doing forearm curls. After his second arrest, Angelo and the Bears had enough and cut the troubled running back.
The end of the Benson era in Chicago is a curious thing. In 2006, the Bears went to the Super Bowl with two backs, Thomas Jones and Benson. Last year, it was Jones who was shipped off to the Jets, giving the bulk of the carries to Benson, a former fourth round choice. But Benson stunk out loud and going into camp this year, faced strong competition from draftee Matt Forte.
When Benson was arrested for drunk boating, the Bears seemed to look the other way, but on the heels of his second recent arrest, this time DUI, the Bears, having learned a hard lesson from their experience with Tank Johnson, decided the best move was to rid themselves of the problem altogether.
The fact is, Cedric Benson is a first round, fourth pick bust in a long history of Bears busts at running back including the likes of Rashaan "One Toke Over the Line" Salaam and Curtis "Sharp Dressed Man" Enis. In each case, there were warning signs before the draft of character or work ethic issues which were ignored and which eventually bit the Bears like the proverbial rabid raccoon. Now, they will pay the price as they will take a cap hit for a while until Benson's contract is over.
The good news is, the Bears can move on from a player who never came close to attaining the potential the team thought he had. The down side is he didn't take Rex Grossman with him.
