White Sox Homestand Off To Rocky Start

It was a tough weekend for the Chicago White Sox, losing two out of three to the Colorado Rockies, a team that isn't nearly as bad as it has been.  That said, the Sox have plenty to be concerned about.

First, the offense is back to struggling again after the homestand prior to the Detroit series.  They are not getting key hits or driving men in.  Carlos Quentin, who had carried the offense for the first sixty games has slowed down considerably (probably as a result of teams now having a book on him), Paul Konerko is probably headed to the DL, Jim Thome is fighting back pain and the pitching is not as sharp as it was a couple of weeks ago.

The Sox get to rest up today before resuming play Tuesday night against the Pirates.  For those that think that is a free spot on the Sox bingo board, let us not forget that Pittsburgh swept the Sox last year.  Even at home, it may be tough for the Sox whose inconsistency on offense is maddening.

Now, back to the injuries.  Should Konerko go on the DL, you will hear the hue and cry for Jerry Owens.  I still think Owens isn't the answer.  Brian Anderson should get an extended look in center and Nick Swisher should move to first.  Alexi Ramirez could also see sometime in center.  I'd probably bring DeWayne Wise back up as most of the Charlotte roster flat out sucks.  There is a kid named David Cook who has hit pretty well, but he's only had 17 abs in triple A since being promoted from double A and would probably be in over his head at the major league level at this point.

Of more concern to the Sox, is getting Quentin back on track and getting Thome's back straightened out.  Without Paulie in the lineup, Quentin, Thome and Jermaine Dye are going to ask to carry the load and against the Cubs at Wrigley, Thome won't be playing so Quentin and Dye become that much more important.

I don't know if you noticed, but the sleeping giant known as the Tigers has won six games in a row to pull to within six of the Sox.  I would be far more concerned about them than the Indians or Twins at the point.
