Screw The Cubs, I Want Another Trophy!

I've seen several stories over the weekend about how the Cubs and White Sox could be a World Series preview.  I've seen several stories about how, since both teams are in first place, this should be a great series.  I want to go on record as saying to me, the Cubs are just another National League team.

After 2005, when White Sox fans discovered that winning a World Series was something that could be done, I stopped worrying about the Cubs.  After all, the Sox championship gave me the ultimate leverage if one of my Cub friends got out of line.  "Yeah, well the Cubs could kick the Sox ass" they'd say.  "When was the last time they were World Series champs."  "Gee, I think my white wine is getting warm, gotta go."

If the Sox were to play the Cubs in the series, then it would be a little different.  But, as I  learned a long time ago, you don't worry about other teams, you worry about your own.  In all honesty, the Tigers, Indians and Twinkies pose a larger, more serious threat to the Sox than the Cubs. When I look at the standings, that's what I look at first.  The rest is just hype.

I won't lie to you.  I enjoy it when the Sox beat the Cubs because a lot of their fans are arrogant pricks who think that they are superior to Sox fans.  But, at the end of the day, the goal of winning the division, getting to the playoffs and getting back to the series resonate with me more than if John Danks can out pitch Ted Lilly.  Or if A.J. Pierzynski will get beaned by Carlos Zambrano.  Or if Jim Thome can hit a ninth inning pinch home run off Kerry Wood.

Enjoy the competition, but for bragging rights nothing beats hardware.  Nothing.
