White Sox vs. Cubs: Chip Shots Breakdown
Here's my crack analysis (or analysis) on the Sox vs. Cubs:
1b
Cubs:Derrick Lee
Sox:Nick Swisher
I love Swisher because he's nuts. But face it, Derrick Lee is a very good ball player and a terrific first baseman
Advantage: Cubs
2b
Cubs: Mike Fontenot/Mark DeRosa
Sox: Alexi Rodriguez/Juan Uribe
DeRosa is the Cubs version of Pablo Ozuna. Fontenot is a light hitting, decent fielding second baseman. The Missile, is well, the Missile and has been playing very well lately. He still needs to work on getting acclimated to second. Uribe is great defensively.
SS
Cubs: Ryan Theriot
Sox: Orlando Cabrera
Theriot is a an average shortstop. Cabrera is a multiple gold glove winner who can hit, sometimes with power.
3b
Cubs: Aramis Ramirez
Sox: Joe Crede
Both can hit, but Crede's defense is that of legends, although he's had an off year in the field. Ramirez is the scarier of the two at the plate, but Crede is a great clutch hitter.
Lf
Cubs: Committee
Sox: Carlos Quentin
Certainly, this would be more interesting to compare and contrast if Alphonso Soriano was in the line up. But he's not. Even though he's been struggling lately, Carlos Quentin has shown signs of coming out of it. Besides, he's still better than anyone Lou Piniella has to stick in left field.
Cf
Cubs: Reed Johnson/Jim Edmounds
Sox: Brian Anderson/DeWayne Wise
The Cubs have experience. The Sox have the inconsistent BA and the journeyman Wise.
Rf
Cubs: Koske Fukudome
Sox: Jermaine Dye
Dye definitely is the better of the two power wise. Both have great arms and are talented defensively. But Fukedome is a master at being patient at the plate, a solid hitter and solid fielder.
C
Cubs: Giovanni Soto
Sox: A.J. Pierzynski
A.J. always saves his best for the Cubs. Soto is a five tool player and a probable all-star. The biggest disadvantage the Sox have in this position is that they couldn't throw my 73 year-old mother out if she tried to steal second.
Starting Pitching
The Sox starters have been tough this year. Provided John Danks, Jose Contreras and Javy Vasquez don't have one of their meltdown innings, I'll take my chances with them over Lilly, Marquis and Dumpster. Although, Dumpster has been tough this year as well.
Bullpen:
This is where the Sox shine. If they can get into the seventh and trot out Dotel, Linebrink and Jenks, it's good morning, good afternoon and good night. Having some wins by large margins have given the Sox big bullpen guns some rest. The Cubs have serious bullpen issues. Carlos Marmol had a big meltdown last night in Tampa. Jane Eyre is showing why the Sox dumped his sorry ass years ago. Bob Howry is okay and Kerry Wood is formidable, but he's not Big Bad Bobby. The Sox middle guys (Thornton, Logan, Masset) are also pretty tough.
