End Run May Result in Viking Funeral

In what continues to escalate in a war of ridiculousness, the Green Bay Packers have formally charged the Minnesota Vikings with tampering with Brett Favre.  No, really.

The Packers have told the league that the Vikings have re-ignited Brett's passion to play and caused him to reconsider his retirement.  Huh?

If this is all true, this is like asking your buddy's wife to marry you moments after she filed for divorce. She's not exactly free.

So, if I have this straight, Brett Favre was just sitting around, enjoying his new found freedom when the Vikings called him and blew enough smoke up his backside to get him to think about coming back to work?

If this is true, then the Vikings are truly the most stupid organization in football.

First, Favre plays for a division rival and Packer GM  Ted Thompson would not, under any circumstances, real or imagined, trade Favre to a division rival nor allow Favre his freedom to join one.  Thompson is a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them.  The only way that Thompson might do it is if he felt there was no gas left in Favre's tank, which most football people feel still has some gas left in it.

Second, why would the Vikings want to have Favre come back to haunt them if Thompson insisted on keeping Favre?  Isn't the NFC North more competitive without Favre in there?  Wouldn't Thompson trade Favre to a team the Packers will not play in 2008?  Maybe a team in the AFC?

So calling favre and feeling him out probably is okay, but seeing as how the Packers still hold his rights, it was probably not a swift maneuver.  But then again, these are the people that employed Mike Tice as a head coach.

In defense of the Vikings, the Packers claim that Favre asked for his release knowing the Vikings were there for him.  I think Favre asked for his release simply because the Packers left him few options besides holding a clipboard.

Don't worry.  This will get even thicker soon.
