Random Shots: White Sox Try To Recover From Royal Beating
Random shots while wondering whatever happened to Ossie Blanco:
After Friday night, Sox fans were all excited about the six runs in the first inning and the offense looking good yadda ,yadda. Last night was a reality check with yet another sub par performance by Pink Floyd. And this was the Royals. The Royals. At U.S. Commiskey Park. And to add injury to insult, Jermaine Dye may be out of the lineup this afternoon. The Sox better hope the offense comes back and that John Danks starts the second half as well as he pitched in the first half. If not, here come the Twinkies.- Middle relief has been a growing concern for the Sox the last few games. Last night, both Nick Masset and Adam Russell were hit pretty hard. Look for Russell to head back to Charlotte sometime soon. Especially if the Sox can pick up an experienced bullpen guy like Huston Street. Kenny Williams needs to beware that the last big name relief pitcher he got from Oakland blew up in his face. And looking at the kind of year Street's had, he seems like Mike MacUseless waiting to happen.
- The Brewers are up to something. They still need to fortify their bullpen which is awful. If, as Tom Haudricourt suggests they are going to acquire Ray Durham, might they use Rickey Weeks as trade bait? The bottom line is Melvin will do whatever he has to do to try to bring playoff baseball to Milwaukee. And this may be his only chance.
- The Elderly Hillbilly was in Green Bay last night to honor his friend Frank Winters. He had no comment. But Mark Murphy, President of the Packers did and he says he backs Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy in the dispute over the Hillbilly coming back. Packer fans just want this to go away, but one thing is for sure: Favre has damaged his reputation with a lot of the fans for being an ass. And in Green Bay, that does count for something.
- Jonathan Toews is named the third youngest Captain in the NHL by the Chicago Blackhawks. You just want to believe that with the Hawks having a fan convention, the big January game at Wrigley Field and a good, young solid core of players that maybe, just maybe, the Hawks will become relevant again. This would be huge for hockey and the NHL as well. Maybe we'll go back to where we were in the early 70's when the Hawks were a lot more popular than the Bulls.
- Speaking of marketing, Friday night was 80's night at U.S. Cellphone Field and Andrew has made an 80's mixtape. (The 35th Street Review)
- How do you keep Bob Sheppard at Yankee Stadium AFTER he dies? (and he's not doing too well right now.) Voice Speech technology. Bad Idea. (Baseball Think Factory via Sports Filter)
- Speaking of being older and in questionable health, there may be good news on the horizon for Georgia football fans and the rest of us that just enjoy Larry Munson.
- Here's something you don't see very often: A female athlete that breaks the law. (Deadspin)
- Gilbert Arenas will most likely not be greeted very warmly in Milwaukee. Do they call him Agent 0 because of his number or his I.Q.? (Hugging Harold Reynolds)
- Years ago, David Allen Coe wrote (tongue in cheek) the perfect country song. Now, Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Tribune claims he's found the formula for the perfect Chicago sports column.
- As dumb as this sounds, I can see it happening. That's really sad, too. (Serious Sports Network)
- There are now 600 fewer places for Peter King to hang out on the road.
- John McCain, spokesman for America's older generation which has never embraced technology. America is not tired of the free exchange of ideas and the availability of information, Senator. America is tired of people like you that can't even log on without help telling us we are tired of something that we enjoy. But don't worry, Senator we'll stay off your lawn.
