Send in the Clowns

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called yesterday's 8-7 White Sox loss "an ugly ass game."  True.  Maybe because the White Sox were wearing ugly ass uniforms (the 1983 Clown suits, among the ugliest in MLB history.)

The tone was set for the day when Sox starter John Danks had a shaky, four run first inning.  The Sox came back and made a game of it, actually taking the lead in the bottom of the seventh 7-6 on a Nick Swisher home run.

If 1983 was"winning ugly" then yesterday was "losing ugly" as with two outs in the top of the eighth, Octavio Dotel hit Jose Guillen who hadn't hit all weekend because of a stiff back and took several minutes to stretch out before he pinch hit for Alex Gordon. Then, Matt Thornton came on to pitch to Ross Gload who promptly coaxed a walk before Esteban German sealed the deal with a two out double.

The Sox had a chance in the bottom of the eighth until Jeff Cox, summoning the spirit of "Wave 'Em" Wendell Kim, tried to score A.J. Pierzynski from second on a single by Brian Anderson.  Jim Thome promptly whiffed with Carlos Quentin, the tying run, standing on second base.

The game and a few pre-game announcements have sent chills up the spines of Sox fans.  In fact, the only good news yesterday was that the Rangers, who will be in town tonight for a three game series, beat the Twinkies.

Some things to be concerned about:
  • Jermaine Dye was struck flush on the knee by a pitch in the fourth inning and had to leave the game.  It's a deep bruise and he's day to day, but Ozzie said after the game Dye most likely will need a couple of days to recover.  That means either Anderson or DeWayne Wise in center and Nick Swisher in right.  Swisher doesn't have near the arm that Dye does not do Anderson and Wise the bat.
  • Jose Contreras is on the 15 day DL.  Ozzie is upset because Contreras didn't tell him soon enough his arm hurt.  The Sox caled up D.J. Corrasco who was probably the highlight of the day in three innings of scoreless relief. The Sox are rumored to have sent for pitcher Clayton Richard which means Adam Russell is boarding a Southwest flight for Charlotte.
  • Outside of the effort against the Cubs a couple of weeks ago, Matt Thornton has stunk lately.  Nick Masset has also pitched poorly lately.
  • The Sox may be in the market for more pitching.  What Kenny Williams has to trade is limited, but he's always been able to git 'er done.
  • The White Sox dedicated a new statue to former player and current first base coach Harold Baines.  It was the only way they could get Baines to speak.  There is also something to read into here.  Baines was a favorite of "The Chairman" who traded for Baines a couple of times, even after Baines was long done.  This leads one to believe that Paul Konerko, who gave The Chairman the ball from the last out of the 2005 World Series is untouchable.
  • Former Sox "secret weapon" Pablo Ozuna is now a Dodger.  Former Sox second baseman Ray Durham is now a Brewer.
