Random Shots: White Sox Bruised, Battered and Loving It

Random shots while wondering whatever happened to Nelson Santovenia:
  • So far, so good for the White Sox on their big road trip.  A huge come from behind win Friday night thanks to Jermaine Dye (who is not getting near enough credit for the year he's having) and some anxious moments, but a big win last night as well.  Anyone for a knockout punch this afternoon?
  • What makes these wins even sweeter (besides the distance between the Sox and Tigers in the standings) is the Sox are doing this without Scott Linebrink, Joe Crede, Jose Contreras and to some extent, Paul Konerko.  BTW, I've read a lot of nasty stuff about Konerko recently and all I have to say is if there is an October this year, you want him on that wall, you need him on that wall.  Just a thought.
  • If the Sox can beat Detroit without four key pieces of the puzzle does it tell us the Sox are a good team with a deep bench and an adequate minor league system or do the Tigers just plain suck this year?  Tiger fans certainly have their undies in a bunch. (The Wayne Fontes Experience)
  • By the way, those Negro league Unis last night were awesome.
  • Rob Drake may enter the MLB record book for being the first umpireto throw out a both managers from the same city in different leagues in the same week. Somebody needs to sit this guy down and tell him he's not the show.  In fact, Drake is a minor leaguer and a fill in and is not listed on the official roster of major league umpires. Maybe a one way bus trip to Triple A would cure this guy of his God complex. And lucky for the Milwaukee Brewers, Drake, who has a strike zone as consistent as Amy Winehouse's sobriety, is behind the plate for today's game.  It's a good thing for the Cubs Carlos Zambrano isn't pitching or there might have been a strangulation.
  • Speaking of the Crew, they are 8-1 since the All-Star break.  The big factor in that is key, clutch hits (mostly by Bill Hall and Ryan Braun) and Eric Gagne getting his act together as a setup man.  The interesting thing about the Crew is that they are playing with a "win now or else" mentality, because they realize after the season, they will lose their number one and two starting pitchers to free agency.  One big disappointment for the upcoming series against the Cubs: I'd love to see a Zambrano against Sabathia matchup, instead it's Sabathia against Ted Lilly and Ben Sheets against Zambrano.
  • Why is it Mark Cuban is everything Cub fans want in an owner (and he has the money) yet he will most likely be cock blocked by the commissioner(who will protect the Brewers even though he doesn't own them anymore) and The Chairman (who will protect the White Sox and already hates Cuban from the NBA.)  The sad thing is Cuban would infuse much needed energy into baseball's ownership.  Where the NFL has guys like Jerry Jones, MLB has few, if any crazy mavericks (save for Hammering Hank Steinbrenner.)
  • The saga of the Elderly Hillbilly is really getting interesting, although truth be told, the Brewers are distracting a lot of the locals from it.  Will he go to the Jets? The Bucs? Even if he shows up at Packers camp, his coach will shun him.  So what's left for Favre to do?  Sit at home while Peter King services him.  Now that the commish is actively involved (which is silly because this is a dispute between a team and a player and does not involve the commish) there may be some resolution by the end of the week.  But realize Cheeseheads, The Elderly Hillbilly is gone for good. (Pro Football Talk)
  • If the Cowboys cut Terry Glenn, is she worth a look by the Bears? Given the receivers the Bears have in camp, I'd be happy if Dennis McKinnon came out of retirement about now. (Pro Football Talk)
  • If you stomped on Seattle's heart and moved your team to the middle of a cow pasture what would you call it?  Six lame names have been trademarked for the transplanted Seattle Supersonics.  Me personally?  I would call them either the Oklahoma City Opportunists or the Oklahoma City Carpet Baggers.  Either one fits.  At least Indianapolis now has some company for lamest town in the league. • All my rowdy friends will still be here on Monday night.
  • A fitting tribute to a fallen hero. (The Big Lead)
  • With NASCAR at the Brickyard today, what better place for the top feuds in NASCAR history?
  • Today's List: With so much acrimony around Brett Favre and Barry Bonds, let's remember those athletes that chose to go out at the peak of their powers (unlike Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas, Willie Mays and Joe Montana)
