White Sox Halfway to Nowhere
We're halfway through the four game showdown in the Roller Dome and the Chicago White Sox are oh for two.
Last night, the Sox led 4-0 before Clayton Richards gave up four consecutive two out hits en route to a 6-5 loss.
Losing sucks. Losing to the Twinkies sucks more. And yet, what may be team with more talent than the 2005 World Champs can't beat a bunch of kids who don't know better.
Now you know why Ozzie Guillen is crazy.
Tonight, it's the struggling Pink Floyd facing the ageless Livan Hernandez. Kids, if ever there was a day that you could beat the Barbarians back to the gate, this is it. But to do it, it's going to take a solid effort from Floyd, who has been shaky since the All-Star break and some of that the hits just keep on coming Sox offense. Otherwise, tonight at 10pm, the Twins will be looking down at the Sox in the standings.
I am fully aware that there is a lot of baseball left to be played, but there is a limited number of times that you engage divisional opponents and that those games represent a two game swing. In order to win the division, you must beat teams in your division. The best time to demoralize your opponents is today.
I've watched the Milwaukee Brewers pre-game show the last couple of nights and all of their announcers are setting the bar low for the Brewers saying "The fans are more jacked up than the players and there's a lot of baseball left after this series, so it's not urgent." I disagree. Anytime you play a team in your division, you want to beat them. Period. It doesn't matter how many games are left or where you are in the standings, you want to dominate. Selling the series short of what it is makes it looks like the players don't care and the fans are a bunch of yokels.
"There's a lot of baseball left" is an excuse for failure to execute. It's loser talk. Maybe the fans are objective enough to know that you can't turn it on and off when you want to and that momentum is a key factor in winning championships. Give it to the other guy and he may just run away and hide.
Let's hope momentum reappears in the visitors dugout tonight.

Lightning Round
- I've stuck up for Paul Konerko and I'm still on his side, one of the reasons that sitting him down for an extended period does more harm than good in the long run. But if anyone has the guts to do it, Ozzie does.
- When it comes to winning, the Sox have issues with it under glass. (South Side Sox)
- The Sox are still struggling with men in scoring position and two out. Last night, they left four men on base in this situation. (Sox Machine)
- Clayton Richard pitched okay last night. You wonder if his offense could have kept scoring if the result would have been different. Basically, he made it twice through the line-up before their Twinkies made adjustments. I think the kid has a future but needs a little more seasoning, perhaps from the bullpen or AAA. One thing is for sure: He's no Arne Munoz. (Life in the Cell)
- Ozzie apparently doesn't understand that the fans have passion too.
- The Sox losing these two games is way off the radar because Cubmania has firmly taken root. On the other hand, how do you lose two games when you trot out C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets?
- Guess who is making his annual trip to the DL?
- White Sox fans have done some stupid things, but we're not this stupid.
