Hang On, Help Is On The Way

In any war, there is attrition.  The season ending injury to Jose Contreras and the inability of Boone Logan to get anyone out have necessitated a glut of roster moves for the currently first place Chicago White Sox.

To replace the left-handed Logan, the Sox have acquired Horatio Ramirez from their AAAA affiliate in Kansas City.  That's where the Sox develop their relief pitchers (Mike MacUseless, Andrew Sisco, Octavio Dotel, D.J. Carrasco, et. al.)  Ramirez will pitch middle relief.

As predicted in this column, the Sox have also brought up former number one draft pick Lance Broadway has been summoned from Charlotte to bolster the bullpen.  Broadway doesn't throw hard and is sort of a right handed Mark Buehrle.  This is an important audition for Broadway, who has been up before without distinction.  The Sox will no doubt be looking for starters next year because there is no way that Contreras will be ready by spring training.  This also may be an opportunity to display Broadway at the major league level to possible suitors (for example, Seattle.)  It is widely known that part of the ransom the M's are asking for in exchange for Jarod Washburn is a top pitching prospect.  Broadway fits that bill.

Finally, the Sox have dispatched Josh Fields back to Charlotte.  Juan Uribe has been so good at third base, that Fields wasn't getting any at bats.  No doubt Fields will get them next spring when he is crowned third baseman.  But for now, he'll have to be happy eating bar-b-que in Carolina.  In his place, the Sox have called up Chris Getz who was very impressive in spring training and has done a nice job at Charlotte.  Getz will be used as a primary back up to Alexi Ramirez at second base.  What makes this a curious move is when Joe Crede returns, Juan Uribe becomes the primary backup to Ramirez, which limits Getz to occasional pinch running, pinch hitting duty.  Unless of course, Crede isn't coming back or is not coming back until September.

The Sox may, even in a pennant race, play a little musical infield.  They may want to see Ramirez at short for a couple of games and give Orlando Cabrera a blow.  Pairing him with Getz may give an early start to what many project is the White Sox infield of the future.

If you stop and think about it, next season, the Sox could turn over the entire opening day infield if Paul Konerko gets moved in the off season.  But that is another discussion for another day.

I think the Sox have made some solid adjustments here, but I'd still like to see them acquire another veteran, proven, starting arm.  I sure Kenny is smiling and dialing even as we speak.

Lightning Round
  • Pink Floyd now is a twelve game winner.  You would have never thought that in the first inning yesterday when he gave up a two out walk followed a Mike Lowell home run.  Pink, we love you, but please, cut out the damned two out walks.
  • I watched the game on the national hookup on TBS.  The knock on Chip Caray when he was with the Cubs was that he didn't do his homework.  That was true yesterday when he claimed that the Sox re-acquired Gio Gonzalez from Cleveland in the Freddie Garcia trade before they shipped him to Oakland to for Nick Swisher.  No, Chip, that was Philly.
  • TBS broadcaster Buck Martinez doesn't think the Sox have a chance at a ring this year.  Martinez, who would sound great replacing Tim McCarver on Fox (of course, who wouldn't) says that teams that live and die by the bomb don't win championships.
  • The two (hopefully three) victories over the Red Sox help the White Sox position themselves for a possible wild card run.  The Twinkies are currently 1½ games behind Boston, but that's pretty fluid considering how they and the White Sox keep flip flopping in the standings.  The Twinkies start a series tonight against an angry Yankee team who is 4 games out of the wild card and can pick up some ground with a couple of wins this week.
  • As Paul Harvey would say "Our for what it's worth department."  Yesterday afternoon, I was driving back to Sheboygan and had the Brewers game on.  Bob Uecker says "here's Gabe Kapler leading off" to which I responded out loud "with a leadoff home run."  Book it, Danno. I only wish there was someone else in the car who heard me.
