Digging For Diamonds

Let's try to find a few diamonds in the pile of crap that was Saturday's White Sox-Oakland game.

The game had a slow, awkward pace to it that drove it to the three hour point.  It almost seemed disjointed and surreal at times.  For the Sox, it was definitely their pitching that won the day for them.  Some highlights:
  • John Danks gutty six inning performance.  He did not have his best stuff yesterday, but with a little help from his defense and the anemic Oakland offense, he survived.  I thought Ozzie sending him out in the sixth was a rite of passage. Sure, Ozzie probably needed to save an arm in the pen, but still, he didn't baby Danks based on pitch count like he usually does.  This could possibly be a watershed moment.
  • D.J. Carrasco comes back to pitch a solid seventh, including getting out Kurt Suzuki, his nemesis from the night before.  His only blemish was a two out walk to the Big Hurt, which put Eric Patterson in the ball game.  Fortunately, even getting Patterson to second on a stolen base wasn't enough as Emil Brown flew out to end the inning.
  • Matt Thornton throws a perfect, strike out the side eighth inning looking like the Matt Thornton we saw against the Cubs at U.S. Commiskey Park.  He must love being on Fox.
  • Bobby Jenks gets a quick two up, two down before going 3-1 on Mark Ellis.  Elllis has burned Bobby in this ballpark before, but fortunately, Jenks got him to fly to Brian Anderson to end the ballgame.
  • Toby Hall had a fine 2 for 3 effort.  Maybe Ozzie should work him into the lineup more.
Now, the lowlights
  • The Sox lead off an inning with a base runner seven out of nine innings yet only scored twice, and that was in the second when they scored both their runs.
  • Jermaine Dye went 0-5 which is not a cause for concern but maybe an excuse for a day off. Perhaps Junior in right is not such a bad idea today.
  • Danks gave up five walks the most he's ever given up in one outing.  It's not a problem if you win.
  • Silly errors like the one Nick Swisher made leading to the only Athletics run are playoff killers.  Friday night, Juan Uribe dropped a pop up.  The Sox have to tighten these things up.
  • The Mariners suck.
One more against Oakland, then fly back to Chicago and meet the rested Mariners.  Meanwhile, after the Twinkies play the A's in the Rollerdome, they go on a thirteen game road trip to LA, Seattle, Oakland and Toronto.
