Blowouts Make Your Mind Wander
There's no sense in recapping what happened yesterday. The White Sox scored early and often and cruised to a 15-3 win and a series sweep over Seattle. However, with the big lead, the boredom set in and my mind began to wander:
- It was a day game after a night game, yet Toby Hall was not in the starting line-up. Is he injured worse than the Sox are letting on?
- Kudos to Hawk and D.J. for calling out Alexi Ramirez for not moving a runner from second over in the third inning. No matter how far you are ahead, you always try to do the little things.
- D.J. was talking about Ramirez later in the game and talked what a great player he is. Crowed D.J. "great hitter, great defense." Yeah, D.J. That's why he was five feet behind the second base bag Monday night. I agree, Ramirez is a fine player, but like my wife's cooking, he needs some seasoning.
- Hawk started into this deal where he said "Greg Walker is the first major league hitting coach to have a 500 home run hitter and a 600 home run hitter on the same team." Which would actually be cool, Hawk, if WALKER ACTUALLY HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT!
- You have to feel bad for DeWayne Wise. The poor guy gets a start, by accident, and he winds up hurting himself. Worse, if Wise had stayed in the game, Carlos Quentin could have started his day off early with Brian Anderson going to left field.
- I'm getting the feeling that Junior Griffey is finally starting to relax at the plate. Here's a guy who so much has been asked over the years to carry the team. Now, he's a small part of a big lineup with all nine starters capable of doing damage. I think Junior is finally realizing that he just needs to relax, swing easy and the rest will take care of itself. Yesterday, he did fine with an RBI single and his first White Sox home run.
- The Sox justified the acquisition of Griffey yesterday when Jim Thome was a last minute scratch. Griffey DHed, Paulie played first, Wise played center, Swish played right, Jermaine was out of the lineup and the Sox still put up 15 runs. Eli Whitney was right: Interchangeable parts are da bomb.
- The Umpires Union has agreed with Major League baseball on an instant replay system. Now if they would only agree to the weekly mandatory eye test for Phil Cuzzi.
- I'm going to use my White Sox day off to give my undivided attention to the Bears game tonight. Yes, I know it's pre-season, but still, watching the Bears reminds me of something we used to do as kids: Stand on the corner at a busy intersection and wait for the car crashes. How long will it be before Kyle Orton or Sexy Rexy will have to leave the field with the aid of a paint scraper. The best thing the Bears have going for them is that with the possibility of both Chicago teams making the playoffs for the first time ever and the Blackhawks possibly returning to prominence, nobody will realize how bad they are until the first of November.
