Random Shots: If You Can't Hit And You Can't Pitch, You Can't Win
Some random shots on last night's White Sox loss to Cleveland:
- John Danks didn't pitch poorly, he just got behind in the count too much and threw too many pitches early in the game. You pretty much know what kind of night it will be for Danks by the third inning. If he's up around forty or fifty at that point, don't expect him to be around past the fifth inning if that long.
- The White Sox helped Indians starter Faustio Carmona early in the game by swinging at anything that moved. Later in the game, they were patient and that helped chase Carmona.
- I loathe Sox killer Victor Martinez (.318, 17 doubles, 12 home runs, 50 RBI, OBP .422, highest vs. any AL team) The guy finally hit his first home run last night against guess who?
- The aliens apparently have returned the real Boone Logan.
- If Juan Uribe was a pitcher, he'd be Octavio Dotel.
- Here's a sentence I never thought I would ever write: The most effective Sox pitcher last night was Mike MacUseless. That tell you anything?
- If Carlos Quentin is out the rest of the week as the fish wrappers suggest, it could be a long week. It's not just the offensive production, it's the OBP, the base running skills and the defensive skills the Sox will miss the most. Nick Swisher did have a good night in left.
- I'm sorry. With Q and Junior unavailable, the decision to start Jerry Owens in center was a bad one. Not only can't Owens hit his weight, he throws like his arm is made of rotini.
- Getting a Joe Crede a big deal for next year will be a miracle considering his back keeps going out and his agent is Scott Boras.
- God bless the Toronto Blue Jays.
- I had to watch the Cleveland broadcast last night. Rick Manning drives me nuts because he doesn't know what he's talking about. Last night, Manning advised listeners that "John Danks was the most consistent White Sox pitcher this season." Uh, no Rick. That would be Pink Floyd. Later, Manning said "I don't know if the White Sox can afford to lose Joe Crede after this season." I'd agree with you Rick if the guy actually played once in awhile. The fact is, the Sox have played most of the last two years without him.
- In the third inning, Manning's partner, Matt Underwood had Nick Swisher making a nice catch in left and then ending the inning by making a nice catch on the warning track in center. No wonder the Sox lost last night. They only had two outfielders!
