WVU Gets Pirated, Washington Gets Robbed on So-So CFB Saturday
Some casual thoughts flipping around yesterday watching some college football:
West Virginia just looked flat out under prepared for yesterday's game with East Carolina, something not lost on ECU head coach Skip Holtz who was denied an interview with West Virginia after Bill Stewart pulled off the miracle Fiesta Bowl victory and got the job for himself. Rich Rod was laughing all the way from Michigan and not because he beat Miami of Ohio.- For the officials to call a celebration penalty on Washington Quarterback Jake Locker at the moment they did seems to indicate that there is little joy left in this game. A kid has driven a team down the field against a ranked opponent and punches the ball in with seconds left and gets hit with an excessive celebration penalty? Those zebras should be fired. Of course, this would have been a moot point had BYU not blocked the extra point kick. Undisciplined play and failure to execute in key moments are the two things that have become hallmarks of Ty Willingham coached teams.
- Nice of Tim Tebow to show up for the second half last night.
- Nice of Ohio State to show up in the fourth quarter.
- Wisconsin played such a terrible first quarter, I thought the radio announcers were going to break down in tears. The Badgers did right the ship. You'll find them in the top ten after the next poll comes out.
- It looks like if JoPa is going out this year, he may do so in a blaze of glory. No telling how these guys will do against the big guns in the Big Ten, but since the conference is so crappy this year, they have a real chance at a Rose Bowl bid if they keep it up.
- Kansas is still around after a big 2007 season. That's because they continue to play a soft pre-season schedule. Good luck with South Florida next week, you frauds.
- Speaking of teams coached by large coaches, think Ralph Frigen is in trouble after this debacle? Don't blame the rain, this game was played in Murfreesboro, TN.
- Not quite yet for David Cutcliffe.
- Houston Nutt comes up a bit short yesterday but Ole Miss looks a lot better than they have. They could pull as upset or two in the SEC this year.
- Despite Buffalo playing a solid game, Pittsburgh doesn't lose this one. Clearly the depth issue helped Pittsburgh.
- Game I'm looking forward the most next week: Michigan-Notre Dame is interesting, USC-OSU is not. I'll take Wisconsin-Fresno State.
