Random Shots: A Little Love For Ol' Number 10

Random shots while wondering whatever happened to Ken Hill:

  • Now that the ballots are out for the veterans hall of fame committee, I beg you, PLEASE vote in Ron Santo.  I saw the guy play, and save for Brooks Robinson,  there was not another third baseman in his era as good as him.  But since the Cubs never made the post season while he was playing there and there was no superstation WGN so people can see him, people continue to write him off.  His numbers are as good as many from his era and don't forget, the pitching mound was higher and the pitching was much better than it is today.  I've argued for his enshrinement for years because I truly believe that if Banks and Williams are in, Santo also needs to be recognized.  It looks like White Sox third baseman of the future Josh Fields is headed for knee surgery.  Doctors will also see if they can operate to make him faster to his left defensively and more selective at the plate offensively.
  • Reaction to the Ned Yost firing here in Wisconsin has been a mixed bag.  Most people like Yost, but feel like the team needed to do something.  The big thing is people up here are desperate to get to the playoffs and if Yost had to take the bullet for a 3-11 September, that's okay.  I think Yost is a fairly decent manager whose two major flaws are he is too loyal to certain players and he gets too wound up, especially when things aren't going well.  I think he'll land on his feet and get another gig very soon.  I'm thinking Seattle.  By the way, Yost is handling the situation with a lot of class.  And he's right, in most cases when you walk into that room and they've made that decision, you don't get a chance to win them back.  Been there, done that, got the t-shirt (several of them, actually!)
  • Chris admires certain parts of Gavin Floyd's anatomy.  I agree, the battle with Giambi was epic, especially with poor A-Rod running out of breath on the bases. (South Side Sox)
  • Bobby Stompy weighs in on the world pulling for the Twinkies. (Tremendous Upside Potential)
  • Andrew takes us inside the numbers.  The Uribe stat is very telling (The 35th Street Review)
  • Now that Yankee Stadium is coming down, Wrigley Field and Fenway park remain as the only ballparks from baseball's golden age.  Cub players wouldn't mind seeing that number dwindle to one.  Since Wrigley is a primary drawing point, not only for Cub fans but for people who just want to participate in the Wrigley experience, the odds of that happening any time soon are pretty slim.  Besides, in Chicago, building new facilities has been a bust so far.  The park on the south side is a glorified mall, the United Center is sterile and the new Soldier Field looks like aliens landed on top of it.
  • Astros fans really need to STFU. (Hire Jim Essian)
  • Thank-you, Jesus.
